You look near the base to see if there are cracks above or around the head or rim. You look at the mouth to see if there are cracks forming. If it's too misshapen, you toss it. For rifle brass, when it's so stretched that you have to trim a lot, and it's hard to resize, toss it.Originally posted by NefariousHow do you know which brass is reloadable as compared to brass that is not? I wanted to pick up some reloading equipment, and wanted to save all the brass I shot. I just picked up a 1000rnd can of Guatemalan (from ammobros) and another 1000rnd of Radway from AIM. Of course I would be purchasing new brass - but I do have lots of milsurp that I would like to burn through
Ranges can't claim your brass. They "own" the brass from the reloaded ammo they sell there but if you want to pick yours up, I would be surprised if they stop you. Otherwise, match shooters would never go there. They just don't want you picking up any brass other than your own.
FWIW, some (most) indoor ranges don't really own the reloaded ammo they sell. They pay for it but have to give the brass back to the reloading company who will charge a brass fee if most of it doesn't come back to them.Comment

BLM = Bureau of Land Management
It's federal managed property: http://www.blm.gov/ca/
Target Shooting is allowed on public lands. However, you must provide your own targets and remove your debris when you leave your site. It is illegal to shoot at trees, signs, outbuildings, or other objects on federal lands that are for the public's enjoyment.
Bureau of Land Management California policy is to allow the use of firearms on public lands, as provided for in state law, and to cooperate with state authorities in the enforcement of firearms regulations.
Persons have the permission of the Bureau of Land Management to possess and use firearms, including lawfully registered assault weapons, on BLM-administered public lands, except when prohibited by other applicable laws and regulations.
Constitutionally, officials cannot license or register a fundamental right.

If its rifle brass some is reloadable some is not. Look in the empty case at the flash hole for the primer, if there is a single small hole its boxer primed and reloadable, if there is a Y shaped strap over a larger hole then its Berdan primed and not reloadable.Originally posted by NefariousHow do you know which brass is reloadable as compared to brass that is not? Also, most surplus ammo is advertised as being reloadable if it is.
Some military brass hve crimped primers which will need swedging (sp?) or reaming to get rid of the crimp so the new primer will go in.where are my pistol mags?Comment

Yeah, some of those places are great.
Here at work, I had a pallet of some stainless steel anchors, I'm talking a good 400-500lbs worth. I already wrote them off, so I bought it off the manager for $0.01 (has to charge something for anything that leaves) I went to the recycling center and walked away with about $250 cash.
So now I have some leftover ss fastners and all my brass ready to recycle."Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, the mind can achieve." - Dr. Napoleon HillComment

Old brass from ammo yup, but how about those spent primers. How many save those and cash them in at the same time. The Dillon press puts them in a nice little container for you. Those little buggers add up.
Go ahead call me a tight wad!

Aren't the spent primers pretty toxic? The priming compound is usually lead styphnate, or is it mercury fulminate?Originally posted by rick_in_lbOld brass from ammo yup, but how about those spent primers. How many save those and cash them in at the same time.Comment

Oh.. I forgot to tell y'all....I live in AZ...a neighbor...But I still enjoy your site and didn't read anything about full disclosure...:')Originally posted by NRAhighpowershooterUmm... prices haven't been that low in over 10 years.. $1.55 per pound is the going price for Aluminum
Hate to let you guys know this but your State generously pays KAL recyclers a .75/lb 'recycling fee' that comes out of your taxes! Check it out. Truth!
So I was actually right on with what we get here across the border...again...sorry but just wanted to make sure you understood I was actually aware of the 'current drive-in/recycle price' for aluminum cans.
Milsurp...
P.S> Wonder if my son and I should bring our cans over the line and make an extra few bucks on y'alls backs? (Naw...Not...)Comment

Dang, I guess I should start saving the brass even if I don't reload.Comment

I also recycle dead brass, including ALL spent primers.
Last time was a few months ago $1.71/lb, which is about $100 per 5gal bucket of mixed brass.
Scrap prices should be even higher now. I am so glad I have over 20,000 9mm bullets at home, the cost of metals today would make them much more expensive to replace.Comment

You could make a pretty penny by driving around picking up washing machines and junk and dismantling them and selling em to recycling centers... If you don't shoot certain calibers, you should probably still save it until you have a lot of a few thousand. I don't shoot 45 acp but pick it up and sort it by brand now and then when I'm bored. I've managed to sell 1000 federal 45 acp sorted once fired brass for about $.045 to $.06 each, ie.. $45-$60 per K vie e-bay. 40 S&W is selling currently for about $15-$20 a k, and 9mm is selling for similar. There are lots of people out there looking for once fired pistol calibers that would rather buy it than pick it up. Yesterday I picked up about 500 pieces of once fired Winchester 40 S&W and some crazy fool left about 50 rounds of 44 magnum brass on the ground. You can get up to $.20 each for those.
