I'd tell them that they get to fix the problem and if they need your signature, that's all they will get. They are bull****ting you about the DOJ coming to get the guns, and even if they did the DOJ would need to get a warrant first. Not gonna happen.

Just heard from The manager, he was rude. He claims DOJ requires the guns to be re DROS and 11 day hold no exexceptions. That they will give me a $200 gift card to cover my travel and no more. If I don't come in I will be reported to DOJ. I told him I don't respond well to threats. He said I'm not and I have 2 managers listening in on the call.

This seems ridiculous, I told them I will call them back Friday. I dont want a gift card to that ****hole. Any FFL guys reading this and have input?

Ask if they recorded that call. This from a google. I haven't looked into the law in years and cannot vouch for this quote from wiki.

I would get this fixed, it's a headache down the road that you don't want to deal with. If you sell the firearm in the future, there's a good chance that the DOJ's records will still show you as in possession because the purchase/sale records won't match. At that point, getting everything cleared up is going to involve a lot of back-and-forth, finding receipts, copying records, etc. until you can convince them that you actually transferred the firearm. Get the records fixed, and then do a check with the DOJ records to make sure the correction has been recorded in their system. Whatever inconvenience is involved now is worth the time and trouble you'll save in the long run.

I don't know. Regardless of how you feel about Dick's, they are selling firearms which puts them pretty squarely in our corner. I'd hate to lose that service due to mistakes, causing them to give up that game. Give 'em a hand and help them out. Maybe they'll return the favor with some free stuff. No reason to be a dick to Dick's.

For the record, I sold so many bloody guns when I moved up here to Idaho to pay for fences and housing materials and all kinds of various things, I got flagged by the doj because of the quantity of guns I had sold. They did exactly nothing other than ask for my name and want to know if I had in fact moved to Idaho. They won't come after you for a petty gun or two, they're going after people who are trafficking who are really doing things the wrong way so I seriously would not worry about it whatsoever. Unless you absolutely have to have a couple hundred dollars, let them pound sand keep your guns and enjoy your second amendment rights

Following from the state of Idaho...

"(2) A signal of intention to turn or move right or left when required shall be given continuously to warn other traffic. On controlled-access highways and before turning from a parked position, the signal shall be given continuously for not less than five (5) seconds and, in all other instances, for not less than the last one hundred feet."

The 5 second requirement is if and only if you're changing lanes on a controlled access highway. When the limit is 80 and you're running 80+, the 5 seconds heads-up to other drivers really helps, especially at night.

If not, no problem. I think it's good that they were on top of it, instead of it suddenly coming up in several years or if/when the firearm is sold, you suddenly get shocked.

There is nothing about any suspected errors that could have arisen to a fully completed and finalized DROS with legal-to-own guns delivered, that they could have made, that the DOJ would require the guns be returned to the store for another waiting period. That's pure bunk. If you needed to simply go back to the store to help fix typographical errors, fine. I would do that, and have.

But otherwise no; legal guns in my legal possession do NOT get returned to anyone to be held for any length of time out of my possession. Let them call the DOJ, and more than likley they will NOT do that because that would merely get the Dick's employees/manager in trouble with the DOJ. Sounds to me they are trying to cover some bad track, at your expense, and neither being transparent or ethical about honesty with the DOJ.

So you must ask: WHO is REALLY in trouble here? WHO REALLY should be worried about being reported to the DOJ? YOU or THEM but they are trying to put the threat to you to cover up their sloppy paperwork retroactively?

Tell them YOU'RE going to take the high-road and report the situation to the DOJ yourself; see what they say. You have your DROS number and details, and you'll call the DOJ independently and work out the problem and get guidance directly from the DOJ, and report the threats and intimidation over what appear to be their errors in paperwork, before ever stepping a foot back in Dick's.

I would love to hear what Mr. Dick's Manager would say to that reversal of the threat.


I'll be a nice guy and help you fix your paperwork, put my initials by any errors on the 4473 or DROS that have since been corrected for the store/dealer's good graces with the ATF and/or CA DOJ, but beyond that, it's a sand-a-pounding you shall go.

Good point on not letting legally own rifles out of your control. Dicks needs to play by the rules. By having an 11 day wait they are clearly not playing by them. I buy archery equipment from them but have passed on a few good deals on rifles due to this 11 day wait. They try and sell it like its not them its the Ca DOJ. After you call them on it they back down and say yes its the store. I am all for more stores selling firearms in this state but sometimes a lesson has to be taught.

This is why you need to avoid big name chain stores and develop a relationship with a good local gun shop. There's absolutely no way my LGS would demand (or even ask for) the guns to be returned to them while they corrected a misspelling of my first name on a DROS that was already approved. And by the way, if the DOJ had been confused as to who you were, with all your other identifying information provided, they would have put a delay on your DROS rather than approving the guns for release. Tell Dick's to get bent and never go back there.
