FSC cards are printed from a website. There isn't pre-made paper cards anymore.

This popped up on my Market Update today, and how I'm NOT surprised!!! Stock down 16% and riiiiiight the excuse was warm and dry weather that hurt sales SMH.

"Big 5 Sporting Goods Inc., down $1.23 to $6.63
The sporting goods retailer said warm, dry weather in December hurt its sales."

except the guy behind the counter told me I had to pay for the gun before taking the test.; presumably to avoid these situations.
That sounds illegal. How can you purchase the gun if you don't have a FSC?

        Paying for = purchase.

I don't buy from Big 5 anymore; I was accused by the manager of the local store of changing the price on a folding table (in front of other customers). He said I must have brought in a price tag from Walmart or something. I asked if we could look at the price tags on the other 10 tables hanging on the same rack. This required a ladder and during the time it took to procure one, he was loudly exclaiming that there was no way that could be the price, as the item had not been 'on sale' for weeks.

Ladder came, and all of the tables had the same price as the one I bought. He melted down in a rage at all of the employees at that point, it was kind of scary. I suspect he had missed taking his meds.

Another time, I witnessed the 'gun manager' remove the lock provided by the manufacturer from the box of a rifle I was buying and toss it into a box full of locks under the counter as I was filling out the DROS. When I returned 11 days later to pick up the gun, I was charged extra for the lock.

I stated the lock had been provided with the gun, but was told, "We have to charge for the lock, it is state law".

Eff Big 5. I won't spend another dime there as long as I live.

        EDIT> Oroville store, BTW.
Just taking up space in (what is no longer) the second-worst small town in California.

Curious, how busy was it when you two were there?

            https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/f...ctionNum=31615.
31615. (a) A person shall not do either of the following:
            (1) Purchase or receive any firearm, except an antique firearm, without a valid firearm safety certificate, except that in the case of a handgun, an unexpired handgun safety certificate may be used.
            (2) Sell, deliver, loan, or transfer any firearm, except an antique firearm, to any person who does not have a valid firearm safety certificate, except that in the case of a handgun, an unexpired handgun safety certificate may be used.
Up until the point that the FSC is paid for and delivered to the applicant, the applicant, "...does not have...," a valid FSC.

It would appear then, that one would have to obtain, including pay for and receive, an FSC prior to purchasing a firearm. Once the FSC is in one's wallet, one can then make a purchasing decision.

Otherwise, they are violating the law and requiring you to also violate the law.

Not busy at all entirely in the store (I would say maybe 5 customers tops), zero people at the gun counter, after paging for assistance for the gun counter, manager came out within seconds from the employee gun counter door.

Should have bought all 11 of the tables.

The Big 5 in Brea is quite good, attentive, and knowledgeable. Probably because they shoot too. I cannot say the same of any of the other Big 5's I've visited in two states.
