^^^ At lax any other airports i have flown from the agent gives you declaration and you sign it and put in with firearm and go to tasa where either you lock and wait if they want you to open for inspection or leave unlocked till they ok it then lock it and they take it and you go to gate. At lax the agent escorts you to tsaarea. At el paso you take to tsa yourself. At anchorage and seatac and sky harbor take to tsa after checking other baggage. At all places you wait for tsa to clear it then go to gates. Usually takes a few minutes.

I have done it all 3 ways. I MUCH prefer it when they inspect it outside of the secure area. I do NOT like being forced to hand over keys because "Oh sorry, we inspect it somewhere you can't go. Sorry about the lawbreaking and all, but if you want to fly, you have to ignore the law."

I have never heard of TSA taking the firearm out of your sight to inspect. Which I might add, they are not legally allowed to do. If I were in that situation, I would request LEO to be present.

Seems like traveling with your firearms is a true YMMV experience.

Same way with skydiving rigs.
