When you fly with a gun you can avoid hassles with ignorant counter folk by bringing a printout of both the TSA and the airlines relevant policy and rules.

        ^^^This.
However, even this can't stop the ignorance you get from some airline counters or TSA agents. I've shown them policy and law from their own website and they didn't believe that I got it from the "true" TSA site. And this was in the free state of Idaho.

Same for me. Some front counter clerks want to see the guns; some don't; card always goes inside the case. I use the "honey" treatment, not "salt". I want to get on my jet.

The most interesting comments come from non-gun owners standing behind me when I open the case; and what they say to their kids when the kids say "look at that!!! How cool!!!! LOL

Ive flown out of lax and sna with delta and united. They always ask to see if the weapon is loaded. I have a chamber flag in my pistol so its obvious and saves time. Ive had the counter people thank me for the flag because its easy to see it isnt loaded. But you never know who you can get at the counter.

FUD. If the case doesn't get locked until TSA checks it, then how does it get to the TSA screening area? In San Diego, the airline agents treat it much like regular baggage and the the TSA agents don't screen it until they have it behind the secure area.

In my experience, this doesn't actually help. While the TSA agents that I have dealt with commiserated with me, they were at the mercy of the airline agents who generally don't give a damn what either the TSA or posted airline regulations are.

^^^ At lax any other airports i have flown from the agent gives you declaration and you sign it and put in with firearm and go to tasa where either you lock and wait if they want you to open for inspection or leave unlocked till they ok it then lock it and they take it and you go to gate. At lax the agent escorts you to tsaarea. At el paso you take to tsa yourself. At anchorage and seatac and sky harbor take to tsa after checking other baggage. At all places you wait for tsa to clear it then go to gates. Usually takes a few minutes.

As a CCW holder I have flown with legally declared firearms on numerous occasions. If you want to carry wherever you are going and have a recognized permit that allows you to do so in that location than why not bring your firearm with you? Makes perfect sense to me. Just know the laws about transporting firearms in your checked luggage and arrive at the airport extra early so you will have time to deal with any unexpected issues like the OP described and its easy peezy. One thing you cannot due (which some may consider to be an inconvenience!) is curbside check in with firearms. You MUST go to the ticket counter, which could take more time!
