    United Airlines Experience

So I just got home from a round trip from Humboldt County to OC through John Wayne and back to Humboldt.

Coming down was a breeze. Checked in at the counter, signed the declaration, slipped it into my bag on top of my locked case, and off I went. Came down with regular baggage at John Wayne.

Coming back today, a whole other story. Same airline. Get to the counter, declare a firearm in my baggage. Sign the card all looks good so far.

Then the agent tells me that I have to open the gun case so she can check to see if it is unloaded. I tell her that is NOT United Policy. She, and another agent assure me it is. So rather than argue, I proceed to open the case, at the counter. She then tells me I need TSA locks on the case. I tell her that TSA specifically instructs NOT to do that.

So I open the case and she peers in at my SA stainless 1911 and says "OK". I ask, OK to what? She says "I can see it is unloaded."

I ask her how can she tell. She says she can tell by looking at it!!!

So I say OK. She then tells me to slip the card INSIDE the locked gun case. I tell her that is NOT policy and since it is locked with non-TSA locks they will not see the declaration inside the locked case, which they cannot open due to non-TSA locks.

So now she calls over a TSA agent AND her supervisor.

TSA tells her that TSA locks are not only not required but they do not want you to use them.

Her supervisor tells her that she does not need to "check the gun" and the slip is to be taped on the OUTSIDE of the locked hard case.

TSA tells her the same thing, because the declaration is me signing that it is NOT loaded. I am legally declaring that to be the case.

So as they say, YMMV. I happened across a person who insisted she has been doing it this way for years, and yet her supervisor and TSA both told her she was full of $#!t.

    So that's my Christmas story.

BTW - my Springer arrived safe and sound, even flying through San Francisco!!

    Merry CHristmas.

Why anyone would try to fly with Firearms is beyond me. I respect you OP, but I would never do it

People fly with guns everyday. Some people are just idiots. Plenty of people don't know how to do there jobs. Once in a while it negatively affects us.

The only airport here is the Aracta-Eureka airport (ACV), which is really closest to McKinleyville.

I was not driving this trip and planned to shoot at 2 matches while down in SOCAL. I have plenty of ammo down south, and needed to get my gun there with me. I only have the one gun to shoot USPSA with right now. Hence, flying with a gun.

I enjoyed her X-ray vision and ability to tell just by looking at a 1911 that it was unloaded

In the end it was just a minor annoyance and not a problem.

Just 1 comment. I have flown numerous times with firearms and the card that you sign stating that the firearm is unloaded always went inside the locked case, not outside. They don't want to advertise that a firearm is present.

I have never flown on United with a firearm so maybe that is their policy.

Hmmm. My card has always gone in the locked case, whether on UA or AA. And I did have TSA come out to the counter in Las Vegas and ask me to open the case there, then give me the case and my locks for her to lock it in back. That scared me.

Seems like traveling with your firearms is a true YMMV experience.

I need to make clear that the locked handgun hardcase was inside a larger suitcase. So it was not advertising anything to anyone. Clearly the personnel at both airports had different ideas on what policy is.

At John Wayne the agent made me open my suitcase, then take the gun case out, place it on the counter in plain view of dozens of people in the area, then unlock it and open it up and show it to her.

Just travel on SW out of OC. No issue at all. My locks on the case. Case in my bag with TSA lock. Card in my case in the bag. 10 minutes tops. Bag came up with all the other bags.
