Since I keep most of my ammunition in the original packaging, I switched most of my ammo storage to the MTM Ammo crates (ACR8-72). They hold over three times the volume of a standard 50 cal can and stack easily. The larger volume also means there are more options for stacking with the box.
For the loose ammo I do have, I keep those in either the 30 or 50 cal cans, at least until I can box them up for the range.
The large crates run about $20 but can often be found for around $15 -16 when on sale. They've definitely helped my storage issues and allow me to be more organized.
They're also useful for other things from cleaning supplies to magazines to holsters to spare parts, etc..
