9mm 115gr box of 50: 4 1/2 x 2 3/8 x 2 7/8 x 1 1/4
9mm 147gr box of 50: 5 1/16 x 2 9/16 x 1 5/8
.40 S&W box of 50: 5 x 2 1/2 x 1 5/16
.44 magnum box of 50: 6 x 3 1/8 x 1 7/8"
.223 box of 20: 4 1/16 x 2 3/8 x 7/8
.308 box of 20: 5 1/16 x 2 15/16 x 1
.308 box of 50: 6 1/16 x 3 1/4 x 3

The 50 round boxes of Hornady .308 168gr match are awkward. I'll find something else and stick lot number stickers on there so they don't get intermixed.

ever notice that you might have 5 different sized boxes of ammo, but none of the sizes actually fills the can efficiently without leaving a whole bunch of space.

Walmart/Costco ammo cans are Chinese crap.

Specifically how so?

Asian. Lighter sheet metal and gaskets imo not as good as on the real thing. "Get whatcha' pay for".

Well, they're made in China by workers in a country that has a horrible record of human rights and environmental obscenities.

Which has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the cans.

I have 2 cases of the US made Bkackhawk 50 call cans that PSA was selling.
I bought a few of the Chinese combo cans (50/30) that Costco sells.
And I bought a few of the Chinese Walmart 50 cal cans.
Here you go. Completely objective.

The USA cans are made of the thickest steel and the most stout rubber. They all fit perfectly and stack perfectly. They also have flat finished paint. The other two have a glossy paint.

The Costco cans were hard to figure out just why they weren't right. But I finally figured it out. So first, the Costco cans are in the middle as far as the thickness of the steel. They also have the same dimensions as the Black hawk cans. The rubber seals seam to be made of a different rubber than the other two. Don't know if better or worse than the others. Time will tell.
So Here's the flaw in the Costco cans: The handles are welded off center linearly by enough to make them stack off center. This makes them the worse choice in my opinion.

The Walmart cans are the thinnest. And the latches feel the cheesiest.They seem to be strong enough to hold what you store in them. But the sides do bulge out a bit. The thing that I don't like the most about the Walmart cans is that they are actually shorter by just a bit to the other two cans.
The Walmart cans seems to take every opportunity to skimp and cheat the buyer at every turn. They just make you feel like you got taken.

I could recommend the black hawk cans outright without excuses.
I could not do the same with either the Costco can, or the Walmart can.

OK, that's as honest and as objective as I can make it.

Those things are huge.
I use them for 40 S&W, 38SPC & 357Mags.
Bought three from the calgunner who brought a bunch up North to us.

I got a few of those 40mm cans and stuff too, you just can't fill them with ammo unless you have a forklift. Great for other things though.

I prefer .30 cal cans - if I can’t carry it, I don’t want it.

It’s easy to spray paint ammo cans so they look less like ammo cans.
Paint them white, add a Red Cross onto the side and they are just a 1st aid kit
Or label them fishing lures....

16-18 in is really tall for a plastic ammo can. This one will hold four Plano 3600 trays. I have one that is 25+ years old that I use for tackle and some newer ones that I actually have ammo in.

I wouldn't go bigger than the average.50 cans. And personally, I really like the .30's. Recently got a plastic mini can from midway USA. Looks like it could hold a few hundred (max) .223 rounds making it perfect for range use.

No idea about the handle though.

I have mostly .50cal cans, a couple .30s, and what sportsmansguide.com refers to as the .50 cal "SAW" (basically a wider .50 cal box)
