The sales tax is part of the fallout of Cabela's being bought out by Bass Pro. When Cabela's did not have a California presence they did not have to charge sales tax, now they do.

The response to that seems to be 'well. how do we know the customer is not prohibited?'; the answer is 'prohibited persons are not allowed to buy complete ammunition, either - how do you handle that now?'

No, they are not going to jump threw the Cali legal loops and read up on them is the correct answer. To much trouble to deal with so they just don't deal. No, you're not correct. The law clearly does not affect reloading components as you so incorrectly state it does. Yes, a misinterpretation of the law might affect them but, a misinterpretation of any law cold affect anything. The fact is that it will not be illegal to purchase reloading components without going through a licensed ammunition vendor. It is up to each vendor to make their own policies and it always has been that way. Plenty of vendors choose not to do business where it is legal to do so. that is their right just as much as it is your right to choose who you will do business with.
