    It's an ammo/barrel fit problem.
You probably filled that mag from the same box of ammo.
    ^^^+1^^^

Headstamp pic appears to have crimp and sealant intact. Even looks like some sealant still on top portion of the primer.

Throat too short or bullet too long.

Bullet got jammed in rifling (almost certainly) or the throat (unlikely).

If it's a new barrel, that's it. Which barrel is it?

      Chamber cast will tell all.

If plain steel, a throating reamer can fix.

OP, how many rounds have you put through that barrel before this happened?

Old bag of loose rounds? Sounds like mystery reloads to me, would be surprised if they weren't a little out of spec, even though they might work ok most of the time.
I was shooting both. The federal is what i wasnt sure of.

It is a bear creek side charging upper. I got maybe 15-20 rounds through before the happened.

I believe it was advertised as a 556 but i need to remove the handguard to make sure. I'll get to that when i get back home.

If the bullets were not crimped correctly / not enough neck tension, the bullet can launch forward after the bolt closes and engage the lands/ groves of the barrel.

Not sure why the primer did not get struck.

If the neck tension is too light, then running the bolt can extract and eject the case while the bullet stays in the barrel throat. The unburned power would spill with gravity.

A stuck bullet can easy lead to a blown up firearm.

If it is a new factory built gun, contact the manufacturer and get their guidance.

You can also remove the firing pin and try cycling a box of ammo to see if the same issue occurs.

You can sharpie the bullets to see if they projectile is contacting the lands and grooves.

I would pull the bolt 100% to the rear and let it fly forward.

A lot of firearm function issues are magazine related... this does not seem to be one of those times.

Sounds like you were using reloads that are out of spec. If the case was fire formed in a different chamber it could be to large to completely seat in the chamber causing your "click" out of battery(luckily). A bullet that is not crimped can be propelled by inertia out of the case and get stuck at the rifling's. Check the rest of the ammo for loose bullets.

I would not do that on an AR.
The firing pin keeps the cam pin aligned.
When you cycle a bolt carrier with the bolt and cam pin in place, but no firing pin, the cam pin can get turned partially in the carrier and really lock up the gun nicely.

Some 5.56 ammo may be too long to fit into some 223 throats.

Contrary to popular belief, .223 and 5.56 are not the same. You can shoot .223 from a 5.56 barrel, but it is not generally advised to do the opposite as .223 chambers and barrels are smaller/tighter.

                                Wylde can shoot either.

OP, looks and sounds like an ammo issue.
