That's not an AK. It's an SKS.

Chinese SKS, not technically an AK, but a similar action and also shoots the 7.62x39 round. The triangle is the arsenal stamp. The Chinese writing I believe stands for Type 56.

You have been scammed....you purchased a much less valuable sks that appears to have been modified to take a detachable Ak magazine.

How much did you pay? Did you buy it legally? I doubt an reputable FFL would have allowed it to be called an AK on federal forms...

That's a SKS made at the Izhevsk arsenal. This is also not legal here in California so I'm about 100% sure this transfer was not done through an FFL as required. SKS's need to have a fixed mag and a non folding stock without a pistol grip. To remove the stock you will pop the lower part of the gun out of the stock by pulling the back of the trigger guard down.

Get rid of this, or make it legal.

Not sure which of us is FUD here, but my understanding is that as long as it has the fix magazine on it you're legal. OR with detachable magazine it would need to have non folding stock and no pistol grip.

Are we sure it takes AK mags, and not those ones with a huge claw on the front?

Izhevsk is Russian, this is Chinese IMO. Probably an arsenal 26 stamp, the Chinese lettering is really the giveaway.

I can't see the photos clear enough so I am basing this on his description. I can see it's an SKS with an incomplete slide folding stock and a it doesn't have the fixed mag.

If it has been converted to accept AK mags this discussion is over as I know of no way to make that legal. If it will accept the SKS mag he can pop that in when he changes the stock.

Chinese SKS in an ATI folding stock.

To remove the stock, you have to put the gun on safe and then push forward on the little latch at the rear of the triggergaurd.
There should be a little hole where you can push the tip of a bullet or a punch until it unlatches.
Then the action will come up out of the stock.

It actually does not appear to have been modified for AK mags.
It's simply missing the original mag.

It's a Chinese Type 56 SKS that is in an illegal configuration. Its not banned by name, as it isn't an "SKS" or "SKS Sporter". You need a fixed stock, and a fixed 10 round magazine to make it legal. I can't see the barrel, but it cannot have the grenade launcher attachment either. No SKS with any detachable AK magazine is legal in CA, unfortunately. *edit* Randall is right ^

Are you required to modify an SKS that has been in ones possession for decades?
Meaning, would you now need to reconfigure a fully functioning SKS?
