So, in this thread we have someone from Florida that seeks information on hunting pigs with a 10mm carbine; and in response we have people stating that black bears are not tough, lead free 10mm is anemic, 10mm is not enough gun for grizzly bears...

I stand by my recommendation, if you want to hunt with a 10mm, get a pistol. If you want to hunt with a rifle, chamber it for a rifle cartridge. If I were, for instance, going to go to the trouble of hunting pigs in Florida with a rifle and I had my choice of using a Winchester Trapper in .30-30 or a Winchester 92 in .44 mag, I'd choose the Trapper every time. If, however, the choices were between a Glock 40 and a S&W 629, I'd take the Glock (loaded with 200 grain XTPs) for ease of carry. Though I'd opt for the 629 and a small scope if I was expecting longer shots.

Considering that it is Calguns, and the original question said nothing about Florida (this did not come out until post #38), assumptions of lead free and the anemic performance of them is pretty reasonable. Especially when joined with the statement that regular lead 10mm rounds are perfectly acceptable for hunting deer and hogs.

Moving the goal posts to fit fake news facts is a shady practice.

A 10mm will work for deer and hogs. I don't think you can get 100% hits over 50 yards, and past 100 yards it probably won't be very effective on larger animals. Yes, they will eventually die if hit at ranges over 100 yards with a 10mm, but it might be a day or more.

As someone already said the no-lead for hunting laws going into effect may make the 10mm ineffective at ranges over ~30 yards. I have not done any tests, so I cannot be 100% sure.

OP 6.8 is not expensive, and it has no feeding problems. Plinking ammo is 2x the cost of 5.56, but the 6.8 will put hogs right down. So will the 6.5G, and Wolf makes ammo for that.

Is there a Tampa in Cali? This still doesn't explain why I stated hunting boar and we are talking about killing bear, regardless of what kind of bear it is.

I like 10mm for handgun hunting. Since you're able to use lead bullets, heck yes, go for it! I put a 6" KKM barrel in my G20 for that exact reason.

Personally I would go with a 460 Rowland or 44 mag which is documented to have downed a 14 foot polar bear!

I realize that the Op is in FL, and probably is not interested in "lead free" ammo. But the Underwood 140 gr Copper "Penetrator" round at 1500 for/700 foot pounds looks good.
I'm at a loss how people can compare that load to Underwood's 40 S&W 140 gr "Penetrator" load at 1200 fps/467 foot pounds.
Kind of like comparing a 38 Special load to a .357 Mag load and saying they're similar.

It doesnt take a cannon to kill animals especially little pigs and deer as the OP was interested in. Nobody compared the 40 and the 10 we only said it will do the same thing Kill those two types of animals.

Thanks for all of the suggestions and input guys,,,but I'm feeling a tad overwhelmed by the options and opinions. I'm just going hold on to my parts for a while, or maybe sell them and just not build a second AR. I can take my AK hog hunting if needed.

Some will say a .22 is sufficient depending on shot placement. On the other hand, some will say you'll need the right tool for the right job. You'll need an RPG. That's right, an RP effffin G just to bring down a bear.

For god's sake, cavemen have brought down many a bears with just good sticks. Yes, S-T-I-C-K-S .

Now, man up and grow a set of balls. Carry what you can shoot fast and accurate.

P.S.. To the "you need to carry Big Bertha 500 S&W for bears". Obviously, you have no clue how heavy that hunk of metal can be. And good luck with the recoil from Big Bertha. A charging bear would have its claws down your throat ripping your heart out from the inside even before you're back on target.
