I used a Peltor when I was a instructor at the range and it was very good.

I use a pair of cheap black chinese ones. I think they are same as Caldwell sells. Kind of bulky and ugly. They seem to work fine and I'm still on my first set of AA batteries. After about two years of use.

My friend has a pair of fancy expensive ones, and he has to buy fancy expensive batteries about every other range trip.

      I don't think I'd trade him.

I have a set of Peltor Comtacs.. love them.. the NRR rating is lower than the 30+ you're looking for..i believe they're in the 22-24 range? If I had to buy another set, I'd go with the MSA Sordins. They're really quite nice and they're fairly lightweight. Albeit, the NRR rating for Sordins is also in the low 20's. The Sordins DO have a mini-jack (1/8?) for running audio line in (like your Ipod). I cant remember if it was stereo or not. While novel, having music in the background for was just to distracting.

For indoors, I always use plugs in addition to my headset- regardless of the NRR rating.

Sordins are pretty widely acknowledged as far as I can tell to be the best electronic ear pro available on the market (with a price to match), and believe to be the #1 choice amongst real-world operators. They also have great battery life, I bought a pair many years ago and am still on the original batteries. They are also really low profile so do not interfere much with cheek weld. If you plan to supplement them with foam, I think you should have no reservations about the Sordins (as long as you don't mind spending the dough). I do not double up, and will must admit that on just a couple occasions I have noticed what felt like they were slightly overwhelmed. I am trying to keep an eye out for it go-forward to see what the pattern is -- might have been when I was RO'ing an open shooter (with teeth chattering compensators), perhaps it was during a carbine class when we had 20 shooters on the line sending 400 rounds of 223 downrange in 5 seconds all at once... The earjack is designed for operators to use for their comms not really to pipe music; I've honestly never used it.

I have also added their gel ear thingies, and they are super comfortable. As they say, buy cheap buy twice --- so, I have one pair of Sordins in my range bag, and one set at the ready with my home defense kit.

I also have a pair of Howard Leights as a spare/loaner, and they are both not as comfortable or low profile, and the electronics do not work as well. But they are serviceable and pretty darn cheap when on sale.

I'm looking for the best Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) combined with the auxiliary jack for ipod use. I'd like to HEAR your opinions experiences with these. What is the best brand/model?

I am considering getting the Pro-Ears Pro Tac Mag Gold. Is there something better that I should take a look at?

            Thanks!

I have been using the Peltor for a while now and they seem to do the trick. The only issue I run into is when I am shooting a long gun with a very nice wood stock I need to take them off so I don't mar the wood surface.
