Range etiquette: what would you do?

I am a relatively new handgun owner and decided to take my brother to the range to let him shoot my 1911. Since he knows almost nothing about handguns, I gave him my own version a of 15 minute safety course before heading to the range... what to do, not to do, expect, etc.

So, we get to the range, and I watched him like a hawk every time he was shooting and especially when I knew the gun was loaded. He did a great job.

Well, while we were there, I observed something that I knew was not cool. A guy in his 50's was there with what looked like 2 daughters in their 20's. At one point, he turned around to speak with them, and he had his handgun pointed toward the stall next to him.

When we left the range, I asked my bro what he thought. While he had fun shooting, he relayed a couple incidents. First, the same guy I mentioned above apparently turned around and pointed the gun from the hip at his daughters while talking to them. More disturbingly, there was a young couple near us, and the lady was apparently clueless as she pointed her boyfriend's gun at my brother, and my brother literally ran away. Since I was shooting, I missed the whole episode.

Anyway, I have 2 questions (the first rhetorical):

    1) What the F is wrong with people? In my limited experiences going to the range, how is it possible that people don't follow the most basic principle of keeping the gun pointed downrange? And why don't "hosts" watch their guests more closely? I was just amazed.

    2) I spoke with my bro about the experience. We both agreed that confronting the individual was a bad idea. As polite as I can be, I don't know how these people will react, and they're armed. So, what would you do if you saw something that was either marginally or blatantly wrong?

I would defiantly, politely, but firmly have said something. All it takes is one mistake, and I am sorry, after an accident, doesn't cut it.

        My answer to your questions:
        1) It boils down to personal responsibility--something sorely lacking in today's society. After all, few parents take the time to truly be parents to their own kids so those kids learn that type of behavior and it spreads. Definitely a sad commentary.

        2) Immediately report this type of action to the range master or manager at the front desk!

Glad to see that at least you were being responsible for trying to be safe. Too many gun owners are way too casual when it comes to safety; they go to the range and fail to think through the consequences of their failure to adhere to the proven rules of safe firearms handling.

Talk to the range master. They are there to keep the range safe.
          Insert something clever here.

Bring the situation to the attention of the Range Master or Range Safety Officer.

In answer to question number one people in these days and times for the most part (at least from my pbservations as an RO) haven't been taught safe gun handling as in times past. In fact a lot of younger people I see at the range now a days only became gun owner / shooters after they became adults etc without the benefit of adult training when they were kids.

As to number two politly mention that to the person that they are covering you, somebody etc and asked them to please maintain muzzle awareness. Like I said they may not simply know or understand. Or alternatively mention it to the RO on duty if there is one.
I'm only smiling at you while you talk to me because it's hilarious that you really think I give a crap about you.

As I've gotten older I thought I was gaining patience, then I realized I simply don't give a crap.

                    1) You can't fix stupid.

                    2) You should confront any unsafe gun handling. Safety is #1 priority and I don't care if you're a newb, law enforcement or even a firearms instructor. If they won't listen, then go to a Range Safety Officer. You only have one chance.

You guessed it was a bad idea, I would have walked over and said, excuse me sir, please watch your muzzle and smile.

Wrong, wrong, wrong!!! It's always better to confront the problem as soon as you see it. It would seem as though they just didn't know any better.
As others have said be polite but be firm. Also, find a range master and report the problem. At least that way they'll be able to keep a closer eye on them.
