OP, be aware that if you are in a parking lot at a public range, from the time you take your unlocked range/handguns from your locked trunk until you make it to the check in counter you would be carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. Same consideration if you say live in a apartment complex without a garage and you transport your unlocked range bag from your dwelling to the trunk of your car...

Best just to get a lock or a range bag that you can lock, and lock it...

An extra pair of safety glasses and hearing protection. I look out for newbies who came unprepared. I once saw a couple at an indoor range taking turns shooting. They shared only one gun, and one pair of hearing protection. I can make fun of beginners like them or I can help and educate them.

The range I usually go to have bathrooms so I take a bottle of D-Lead with me to wash my hands, arms and face.

I was wondering what to put and not to put in the range bag? Could we have loaded mags in the range bag with the gun but not inside the gun? Or do we need to have ammo in a separate bag from the gun.

What do you guys normally put in your range bag?

Also what are the laws for transporting guns and ammo in the car?

Consider taking a Hunter Safery class or NRA firearms safety class...they will cover this topic in depth, especially the transport stuff.

As for the range bag, throw in a bottle of water and some hand wipes for cleaning lead off your hands. And some TP if you will be out where there are no facilities.

Misc. tools (I almost never bring my AK, but I have my AK sight adjustment tool and others have borrowed it many times now).

I carry my handguns and ammo in separate cases. In the range bag, I have two pairs of ear protection, extra foam ear plugs, spare eye protection, a small towel for covering the shooting bench, a small leather shooting rest bag, small packet of Rem wipes, Kleenex packet, a couple of front sight tools, a small pair of 8X binoculars, white board tape, masking tape, staple gun, a box of staples, various Sharpie pens, a spare box of Blazer .22LR ammo (.22s guns always go to the range), spare folded paper targets, Ziplock sandwich bags for brass. I also have a Leatherman tool in my EDC bag, and more tools and a first aid kit in the truck handy for BLM trips.

Putting a lock thru the zipper pull tabs is not he best idea. I'd get a bag with zippers designed to be padlocked. Yea, it's really not going to slow anyone down, but law enforcement will feel better about it.

1) Locked is locked, the law doesn't get into the details of what kind of lock, whether key, combo, Schlage, Master, KMart, or even using a zip-tie. If an LEO doesn't like it, it's not an arrestable or citeable problem. Locks break, I'm not going to have an inventory of spare locks just in case one breaks. I'll use a zip-tie if I want to. Locks won't slow anybody down, it's a bag, so a snatch & run works. Padlocks on hard-mounted boxes, sure.

Ummm... How many 3" 3-ring binders will that require? Plus document protectors, index tabs, Post-It stickies, and an index of the points of insanity and conflicting requirements.
