Yup, you're absolutely right. But somehow that don't surprise me.

The best course of action is for the OP to turn the weapon over to the police as "Found Property" and then claim it back when the owner fails to pick it up from the police.

That ensures that a complete record is made of the lawful transfer of the weapon to the OP, and it ensures that the weapon is checked for any stolen, or wanted, records.

Call your local law enforcement facility. Tell them you have a dangerous weapon that needs to be disposed of. Evacuate the premises and wait for assistance.

Many LE agencies will not run such checks based on a phone call. Such a system could be too easily exploited by a thief trying to ensure that his "catch" is clean.

Most will require that the weapon be present when they make the check, so that it can then be seized if stolen or wanted.

If it's an ordinary gun, not special, just turn it in and be done with it.

If it's something special, then your friend might want to go through the extra hassle of keeping it legally.

I called him to discuss it...

He stated that there is no firearm...it was merely a hypothetical question. He did find some accessories. An old revolver holster and some speed loaders that say HKS PYA on the knob. He is assuming that the family took the firearm that went with the accessories.
