Found a pistol, what is the next step?

A friend of mine bought a bunch of stuff that was cleaned out of a deceased person's house.

In one of the boxes, he found a pistol...

What is the correct/legal actions that he should take at this point if he wants to keep the pistol and/or register it?

    Asking for a friend...

I'd asked if the immediate family wanted it, if not....then add it to my collection.... obviously if you were in a free state.

Call local PD, have them check if it's in NICS, if it's not stolen delete this thread and carry on with your friends life.

              1. Don biohazard/radiation suit
              2. Use tongs to pick up pistol
              3. Transport to local PD in lead-lined container in back of pick-up truck
              4. Drop it off with cops.
              5. Flee the area immediatly
              6. Get down on your knees and thank the lord you survived an encounter with a lost and presumably unregistered handgun

Next step: make a list of people who done you wrong.

We hashed nearly the same question out earlier this year in this thread: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s....php?t=1320578

Not surprisingly, not everyone agreed on how to proceed.

But you need to remember that a firearm holds special legal properties with regard to it's transfer. A realtor may be able to transfer real property, and ordinary personal property within a home to you, they cannot legally transfer a firearm to you.

Tell your friend to save themselves from all the drama and turn the gun over to LE.

                            It ain't worth it!
