i don't know much about the Maverick 88, but, if you're planning on spending $600-$650 on you Ruger SP101 have you considered the GP100 in 3"
little bigger frame, six rounds versus 5 with the SP101, both well made revolvers, if you're going to be using a .357 load though, the recoil could be a little nasty with the smaller framed SP101
i've seen the GP100's in 3" right around the same price range that you have, plus, you can polish it us, slap on some nice grips and have a nice looking revolver to be proud about, like mine

Buy ammo instead.

I would choose the SP101. When something looks good and feels good, that itch isn't going away. On the other hand, the frivolity of a silly gun will probably fade. The Ruger could be sold easier than the Maverick also.
But the reluctance is the cost, extra $350. I tend to forget the extra money I spent on a gun after awhile when I shoot well with it and have pride of ownership. Also, amortized over 20 years, it's just $18 a year ($350/20). That's just one box of ammo. Shoot one box less a year and the cost is recovered.
And lastly, could help new shooters with it.Comment

I'm guessing being the head janitor doesn't pay so well. Maybe the membership can start a fund to buy both.Thermidorian Reaction . . I'd say the sp101, I have the snub version and love it! It's a blast to shoot, and handles .357 with ease. The extra percussion over a .38 is much more impressive than the extra recoil.sigpic"That's more suspicious than a nun doing squats in a cucumber field!"Comment

Get the sp101 because the mavericks go on sale frequently.I'm debating a new gun and I'm torn between two.
This did not start as a serious purchase with a goal or objective or anything like home defense, competition, etc. Just something silly to have fun with but then I saw another one that drew my attention that would have value beyond just silly fun.
The two contestants are a basic Maverick 88 and then install a Shockwave Raptor grip on it.
Totally impractical, silly yet most likely fun to play with.
Or a Ruger SP101 3" .357. Damned if I know why but I just really like the look and balance of the 3" SP101.
I've got Mossberg and Franchi shotguns so the 88 wouldn't fill a niche and I've got medium frame 3" revolvers and a S&W Model 60 so the SP101 really doesn't fill a niche either.
The Maverick and grip would run around $250-$300 which I have in cash from selling an upper, the SP101 is around $600-$650 so I'd have to add money to my cash fund.
One would be impractical silly inexpensive fun the other would be rather practical for defense and teaching new shooters and looks awesome with wood grips but costs double....
