I have quite a bit of their 1/2" and it has held up well. Steel is the way to go if you're shooting outside on BLM or NF land. No mess and good fun; at longer range it's nice to get that delayed sound feedback.

The local SoCal guy in this thread allows you to support a supporting vendor; however, I have no experience with his product. The downside is you have to pay tax if you live in California.

First magazine from hubby's new AR on our AR500 3/8" (rated for up to .308) steel ended up with a chipped edge (perfect little 3/4 circle with two nice SHARP edges!) There's no pitting on the dead on hits....

Thank god he didn't shoot at my cowboy shaped steel! Not only would I have cried... I would have yelled a LOT and never let him forget he ruined my cowboys!!!!!!!!

I'm going to get some 1/2" and hopefully that won't chip if we hit an edge! I want steel for the ARs cuz we have so much fun shooting our pistols at it!

Not all steel is created equally. And it can be hard to know what you're buying, hence the need to look for a company with a good reputation.

With that said, speed is usually what kills a target. And .223/.556 rounds can be at the upper limits...and beyond...of what AR500 steel can handle. Some .223/.556 rounds are rated at 3200 fps. AR500 steel is rated at 3000 fps. 308 rounds are usually going a bit slower although I'm sure there may be some hot loads out there.

Hitting edges can also cause chipping. And particularly if the steel was cut via a method that generates excessive heat. Heat is bad. So pay attention to how the steel was cut. Supposedly, laser cutting is the coolest. But I've read all manner of cutting being touted as the best on various websites.

I use the build them yourself take down saw horses ..... and I DO NOT recommend those. They begin to walk open some while shooting and they end up falling over ..... my solution has been to stake the legs in place which works ...... but in the end is hassle and there surely must be a better way

The swinging plate makes the jaws open and then it falls over , even securing the jaws shut with a screw like they are meant to do only lasts so long before the jaws work open and they fall over.
What I did was run a length of para-cord from the bottom of each 2x4 leg and pull it tight to get a good bite in the wood and then stake it in to the earth....... but like I said , there must be a better way

My solution for this was to make a baseboard with a 2x4 that keeps the legs open. It stayed up for the whole day.

You know something , that had crossed my mind ....... the only thing that kept me from doing it was I will often hang one at 100 and one at 200yds or sometimes one at 200 and the other at 300 yds and the less stuff I have to hump out the better .... with the gongs , stakes and chains in my ruck and me and the wife carrying the 2x4's we have all we can manage for carrying it all in one trip. But that would certainly be a good way for close targets or making more than one trip

Eventually I gave up this system for hanging gongs and went to 4' shepherds hooks. Much simpler and easier to pack. Two hooks per gong hanging by a 6" length of chain.

I still used the sawhorses to hold paper targets but they didn't need the leg supports anymore since they weren't getting impacted directly.

Shepherds hooks may be the way to go. The range I use most often is 50% of the time rather swampy at the 200yd line. "Swampy" , meaning heavily soaked topsoil and grass. Wear sneakers and the socks get wet but boots keep them dry if you don't linger in it. What's the odds of them remaining secure in something like that?

Buying cheap steel is easy but hanging it so it won't fall is another story. Hang Fast Targets has made it EASY and the steel is inexpensive too.

Simply slide our hanger over a T Post and hang the target by bolt or chain.... no tools. The hanger even has a built in wrench.

Multiple targets can be hung in seconds on the same T Post
