How do permits reduce false alarms?

Didn't you get the memo? Permits are a magic panacea for all evils in the world. Just look at what the handgun permitting process did for gang murders in CA, NO, N.Y., etc....

It's about the freeloading aholes who screw everything up with too many false alarms.

I have zero issues with an alarm permit.

Is someone who calls 911 because they thought they saw something they actually didn't also a freeloading a-hole?

I disagree.

It's easy enough to keep track of false alarms without a permit being purchased. If there are too many false alarms, start fining the homeowner.

Having a permit does nothing to further allocation of public safety resources nor does it prevent false alarms.

Permits are another form of taxation. There is no inspection of alarms and no other follow-up beyond the up-front demand for cash.

In my city the police won't respond to an alarm unless the alarm is verified real. This is done, with my alarm, through a call center that you communicate directly with through the alarm system. If you are not home, they call your cell or someone on the list to verify the alarm. You are also notified through a phone app as well, that you can use to operate the alarm remotely.
No permit necessary.

Who wants to hear some false alarm stories?

I've only set up alarms for my business in two cities, Costa Mesa CA and Reno NV. No permits required. I've only ever had false alarms.

We had a couple of alarms not long after we moved to Reno (teething problems). The cops were there (multiple units) when I showed up, and they wouldn't let me into the building until they went in and cleared it themselves.

That was cool, but it made me realize that when I showed up for the alarms in Costa Mesa, the cops would follow me inside!

Maybe the same way water heater permits reduce bad installs. Maybe it's a placebo effect. Maybe people pay attention if they have to pay for a permit.

Maybe sovereign citizens don't need no permits, and permits are making the po-lice rich.

If you don't want the police in on your alarm system, then don't pay for it.

If you don't want to pay for alarm permits, cry me a river, there is all kind of crap I should not have to pay for.

Heard about the permits but never inquired...

I could understand the wasted time with false alarms.

We had one the first week. I knew that stupid Key Fob shouldn't be in my pocket.

Cops were cool but I was pretty nervous about answering the door.

You can. It's the police notification that requires a permit. If your alarm doesn't communicate with the police, I don't know that they care if you have an alarm that does not notify them or otherwise raise hell.

Hi all,

I just got a self install home alarm but my city requires it to be permitted with the local police dept.

On the application there is a line if you have firearms to disclose.

Just wanted to know if you guys disclose that info on the alarm application.

I would leave the line regarding disclosure of firearms blank. I am suspicious of California government entities using this information against me.

Out of curiosity, what is the cost of the permit?

My City requires all persons installing an alarm to obtain an Alarm Permit from the Police Department regardless if it is connected to the Police Dept or private monitoring company or none at all. Permits are $58 and must be renewed triannually for residential & biannually for commercial permits.

There was this line, which I left it blank:
