I was browsing through an old issue of "American Handgunner" from September/October 1978. On page 5, there is an ad for Beretta pistols.
It reads: "Our heavy duty M92 9mm is the choice of law enforcement agencies around the world. Sixteen shots quick, it holds 15 staggered cartridges in the same length as traditional magazines--and another shell in the chamber ready to fire. To reload, just slip in another clip."

Maybe back then, "clip" was the proper term for "magazine," so should we really make a big deal out of people still using the term?"
And, calling a live cartridge a "shell" is also wrong. The shell is only the case...

    I know, cool story, bro.

Clips feed magazines, magazines feed guns.

    Simple.

it's the same as calling soda a "COKE" in TEXAS

what kind of COKE you want? = Orange, Root beer, Sprite?

you call your semi auto Norinco MAK 90 an AK? but technically it's not a real AK47

Clip / Magazine, you know what they mean, so it really doesnt matter

"Clip" has become a pejorative term adopted by the antis so many are sensitive to it when used to describe magazines. I believe antis love the term "banana clip" for AR magazines.

I would correct new shooters I take to the range (together with bullet vs. cartridge/ammo), but I don't try to correct random people even if it rubs me the wrong way.

Reminds me of the term "assault weapon" in general, as well as when it's switched for "assault rifle." I used to try to make the distinction, but these days I am just waiting to get all this AW nonsense overturned by courts so I can tell the antis: "It's an 'assault rifle,' I have it and there is nothing you can do about it." Pedants be damned. I'm actually beginning to get annoyed by the euphemisms such as EBR...

It may be slightly confusing when a rifle uses both. If you were using an ak74, out of ammo and you told someone to hand you another clip... Stripper clip or mag?

People who get upset about the term "assault rifle" are letting the grabbers define the terms and the argument. I won't allow that.

Assault rifles and battle rifles (two distinct categories, with slightly overlapping examples) are mostly defined by their cartridges. An M1 is a battle rifle; an AR-15 is an assault rifle; a FAL could be either one.

Acting shamefully defiant when a grabber calls your assault rifle an assault rifle, and insisting instead it's a "modern sporting rifle," means the grabber has already won the argument.

i personally make sure i say magazine, but i will never correct anyone if they say clip.

cause i don't care what others want to call it.

in a few years time, it will be a battery pack powering the 40-watt laser gun and when people say clip, everyone will still know what they mean even if it is really a battery pack they need.

I do not see why this bothers some people. If the guy says he put the clip in his Colt and started shooting, you would know he could not have squeezed a Garand's clip into his Colt Defender. People were not so picky in the old days and thete were not as many grammar police.

Magazine is the correct term, and that being said going waaaay back soldiers and others used the term "clip" because it was better than saying that thing you reload with when you're empty that holds more rounds, especially while in battle.

Problem was that besides carrying mags in battle for M1 Carbines, they also carried stripper clips too. And of course the Garand only used en bloc "clips", so terms got bandied about for some time back then. Mag is the correct term, but don't assume that soldiers going back many decades didn't call them clips too.
