Lets examine this 'Keep the kids out' business.

Man goes thru a 15 year long custody battle, gets one too many week-end only come over to my house decisions from the Judge. The kids, were no longer his sons, just a pair of little creeps. Stole Dad blind on the first Saturday.

I bought a Stackon on sale ~70 bucks. It is worth the money, but for cash and firearms you really need a real safe.

Limit yourself to the size that you and a trusted friend can move together. And when you do move your safe cover it with a refrigerator box so your friends & neighbors gossip doesn't include your guns.

I have one in my gun room. I basically use it for temporary storage of guns that I am working on and storing spare gun parts. For regular storage my guns go into a safe that is alarmed and has video surveillance.

lots of bad reviews online, seem to be tied to the fact they are assembly required, people order them online, and since they are heavy they get damaged in shipping. I looked around local until I found the size I wanted in stock, and could look at the box and see it wasn't crushed before I bought it. No issues with mine. But certainly their advertised quantity only is accurate if you only own non-scoped bolt guns or break action shotguns. They are "california compliant" as a safety storage device, but don't count as a "safe" if you're hoping to use the safe affidavit to avoid buying locks when you dros.

I have a two-door Stack-on gun cabinet and I also have a large Sturdy safe.

The guns are in the Sturdy, ammo is in the Stack-on. It would take someone 10 seconds to break into the gun cabinet - maybe less.

Btw, the Stack-on came mostly assembled but has a big dent in it. I didn't worry about it but many would be bothered.

Great product, I added 2 more shelves for pistols and mounted it in my closet. I am able to store 2 defense shotguns, several automatic pistols, and enough ammo to allow the police to arrive should a predator attack our family. It is the perfect size for a closet, but small to store more than a few rifles.

Let's set our expectations: This is not a safe; it's a heavier-gauge locker. For what it is, it is 100% adequate.This will stop children, provided it's locked. My cabinet arrived with a large dent. I was able to hammer it out. The lock was extremely stiff, but some oil and tweaking and it's now fine. I recommend some magnetic racks to attach to the inside, since the included foam inserts are useless. It fits about 8 long rifles (3 scoped) though like every safe manufacturer, the capacity must have been measured with youth .22 rifles, not shotguns or deer rifles.If you can't afford a real safe or you live in an apartment, this is perfectly adequate peace of mind. If you have a few guns stashed loose in your closet, this is an excellent and cheap way to protect your investment.If you have a collection worth more than a few grand, you might consider a real safe.

The safe is a good strong safe, very attractive as well. My only concern is that the company uses sticky back foam for the gun racks / gun supports. I'd like to see them use a molded plastic that is screwed to the cabinet. The foam seems to do the job well enough but, for how long?

I know it's not a safe... It's a locking cabinet. The cheap safes from 500-1500 really don't provide much for protection from theft or fire. So it's either from my understanding something that is 3k+ or might as well get a cabinet.
I like that they are portable, a huge vault is a nightmare to move. So it will need to take up space in the garage.

As pointed out already they will keep you legal but won't keep people out.
Paying $3000 for a gun safe ( some would still say you just bought a better locking cabinet ) buys you time. A good thief can still get in it.

I have one, an 8-gun with the "pistol and ammo" cabinet bolted on top. They are both bolted to the wall studs and the main cabinet is also lagged to the floor.

They are adequate for keeping kids and nosy people out, and for the price they are better than nothing. Better than a glass-front gun cabinet for sure. Not a safe, though.

If i lived in a regular house and was away from home a lot NO.
I live in a gated town home and the only entry is breaking down the heavy front door with 8 neighbors 50 feet away with nothing to do but watch out for anything out of place. My wife is home most of the time and knows how to use my 1911 that is loaded and ready. My stack em 12 works for me..It is only basic security.

Since I purchased mine 25 years ago it was already assembled. That explains why the box is smaller now. Assembly required. Still both of mine seem larger than the ones now.

Not ca approved but if bolted down gives some protection and keeps kids out. I have one and no kids also have browning safe.

They sell both pre-assembled and non-assembled versions. Mine was pre-assembled in the box.

The one they call a safe is IMHO is a better way to go for just a few more bucks. The safe is heavier and has a stouter lock than the cabinet. Beyond that, buy insurance.

I have one of these. It's what I lock my CCW in every day when I'm at work. It's in an otherwise secure location (behind multiple locked doors) and within a secure perimeter.

I have a 14 gun-one, primarily to keep kids and snatch-n-grab types out.

It isn't a safe, nor is it the best thing on the market. But, for what I need it for, it works.

OP you know going into your purchase that the Stakon cabinet isn't a safe. It keeps honest people honest and is better than having nothing. I had one for a while and it now serves as my powder locker.
