when i hit the range, i try to make every shot mean something.

as in, i go shoot to practice my skills and to improve. now i will at the end of the day just go rambo on a mag or two but that is it.

i typically shoot no more than 300 rounds total per outing. 400 if i bring a .22lr

Because it is FUN - shooting is such a pleasure.

Initially I did not buy a gun for "protection" - that's what our cops are for (usually)

Many of us shoot weekly, like others golf or get drunk or ...

Because shooting is a perishable skill.
You don't practice you don't stay at maximum efficacy..

You do become more selective in your targets to show you have increased your skills..

Leave your man card at the desk on the way out. Somebody may need an extra target.

Some people spend money to play golf.

Some people spend money to go bowling.

Some people spend money on fast food.

Some people spend money to watch a movie.

I don't do any of the above.

I shoot at a free outdoor range. I collect my brass and I reload it. I enjoy it.

            Your point?

Not to mention dangerous. Shouldn't shoot at rocks. Ricochettes are bad.

Sorry OP. I dont' recognize your authority to determine what constitutes an excessive ammo expenditure for me and my family.

different folks different stroke, if you are struggling getting good and healthy food to your table for your family, or good clothes for your kids while you shooting millions of rounds in gun range, you have your priority messed up and might need to see shrink for that.

some folks have better luck for whatever reason and have left over after all that including taking your family to a vacation once or twice a year and save a bunch for retirement/college fund and "emergency saving" and "wasting" thousand ammos per visit in the gun range or their private ranch or public land as one of their entertainment.

buttom line 200-300 bucks to you is not the same with 200-300 bucks to some people

OP, whatever you plan is, is your plan. I think it is a waste of money to go by an expensive dinner when I can make my own, but that's me. I don't go to the range that often, for reasons beyone my control, but when I do, I burn it up and have fun. When I start getting low on ammo, I buy more. I can afford that because I cook more at home than I go out to eat.

just think of all the nice meals / steak dinners you could have enjoyed with your family / friends on the cost you just blasted at the range shooting a piece of paper or dirt on just one shooting trip?

or all the gas / groceries, clothing for your kids, it would have bought?

I used to conserve ammo - heck, I didn't shoot a pistol for eight years one stretch - back when I was feeding/clothing/raising my kids. I was wasting money buying them stuff, taking them on vacations, feeding the family ski boat, going on missions trips with them....and so forth.

They're all grown, self-supporting men now. I can afford to shoot as much as my time allows, and do so in my back yard. My wife has taken it up as well. We have built a large reserve of ammo, as we have no intention of letting the future of California determine our ability to enjoy our hobby.

I'm no prepper, nor do I shoot aimlessly just to hear the bang. I shoot to keep my skills honed, and because I enjoy it. I've earned the money I spend on it, and I deserve to spend it in any lawful way I choose. We'll have about 65 family members at our house Easter weekend, they all bring food, and I supply the Nerf guns. Heck of a lot more fun than a fancy steak in some over-priced steakhouse.....but you can spend YOUR money as YOU choose.

i shoot thousands of rounds per year because I hate softball but my wife loves to play and she's good too. Since my kids are grown and gone, I hit the range on the nights she's playing ball.

^^^ This is my feeling too. My Wife and Kids like to shoot too, so we go through a lot of ammo when we all go together. My kids have graduated from .22lr to ARs, AKs 7.62x39, and 9mm pistol.

I used to shoot about 500 rounds of 5.56 a month myself, but since Chabot and USI closed I shoot a lot less, maybe 300 rounds of 5.56 and 300 of 9mm.

Buy as much ammo online as possible while you still can. JMHO

to add you can fish your ammo out for its lead and brass to reload and save money for the next round. unlike fishing that soggy turd at the bottom of the bowl and re consuming it.
