Most shooters use up way more ammo than necessary?

I have been cutting back on ammo usage and conserving my ammo for years, I once use to blast away and use a high volume of ammunition in several calibers, but I started feeling like I was just throwing my money away shooting 1000's of rounds at jugs, rocks, paper, after a while it gets monotonous and feels like a waste.

just think of all the nice meals / steak dinners you could have enjoyed with your family / friends on the cost you just blasted at the range shooting a piece of paper or dirt on just one shooting trip?

or all the gas / groceries, clothing for your kids, it would have bought?

I wonder why some people actually shoot 10's of thousands of rds a year?

    Practice makes perfect.

That being said I'm the same. At the range i shoot roughly 50 pistol centerfire + 30-40 rifle a trip.

I augment with lots of .22 and air.
Everyone on Calguns keeps talking about TDS. I never knew we had so many fish keepers!

The TDS on my 10gallon tanks 110ppm
The TDS on my 29 gallon tank is 150ppm (due to substrate)

Because they can and unlike you they enjoy it.

Why to we shoot? Because it's fun (or should be)
I see way too many idiots on the golf course cursing and getting frustrated trying to hit that little ball into a hole and picking it up just to hit it again into another hole. If it's fun, more power to you. If it's not, go mow your lawn. It's another thing you might hate, but at least you are being productive.

I've got the opposite point of view- I think of all the ammo I could've bought with the money I wasted on food. I just turn it to poop anyway. Could've had bullets instead.

Real men would provide food (friends can buy their own damn steak) gas for the vehicle, and clothing for thier kids first and whatever money left over is for ammo to waste.

Ill take a couple hundred for me and a couple hundred for anyone else that is with me, just in case they run out... Why? Because to me, why have it if you are not going to use it.

Sure, there are some trips I only fire off 100 rounds. (rare)

That's like saying why go fishing if you are just wasting bait every time the line comes back empty. It is more than the activity itself.

Sometimes I practice, sometimes I just shoot for fun.

I am buying and conserving my ammo until the buying restrictions come into play, then I will use it slowly feeling the satisfaction that, no I will not play the .gov idiocy game.

ROFL! that is so true! but my cousin and BOL loves it. They razz back at me whenever I go to the range but hey it is a hobby for most. I just like to know I can protect my family if need be.

But like OP said, I only shoot 50 rounds of pistol and 30-40 rounds of rifle when I do go to the range. I reload so it is not that bad considering most of my components I bought 20 years or so ago that I am still shooting. Heck I even have 9mm ammo when it use to cost 3.7 cents per round.

After shooting 50 rounds or so of pistol i notice the gain in skills doesn't offset the additional rounds expended.

I shoot as much ammo as I can enjoy. And I'll continue to shoot it as fast as I want to enjoy it.

Now I don't feel like the odd ball.

                          You could go to:
                          movies
                          bars
                          vegas
                          casino
                          restaurants
                          gun show
                          travel
                          sporting events

                          I would rather go shooting.

The three rifles I shoot most often are 9mm, 30-30, and 30-06. The 9mm is the most expensive to load for, because I cast my own for the 30 cal and use light loads for fun and Silhouette. For the price of 22lr, per round, I can shoot the 30 cal rifles. 9mm costs me 11-12 cents per round and takes less than 5 minutes per 100 to load.

Now, I have cut back on just throwing lead down range. My brother hasn't been able to shoot lately so often times I am shooting by myself. Much of my time at the range is spent taking care of club business, so it isn't uncommon to not fire a single shot when I go out. The real shooting value is in the pistol matches, 3 gun, or silhouette.

Why is it that I can hit the silhouettes with no problem during the practice, but once the match starts, I'm all over the place? Maybe the pressure of competing. The AR 9mm is great for pistol matches, so I ran both last weekend, but the striker tip broke on my XD after 30-40 thousand rounds, so I had to borrow a Glock. That glock learned to shoot straight by the end of the day and was getting almost all double alphas.

                              More necessary than what?

It's not necessary that I shoot any ammunition at all.
