I do both. After spending many years shooting archery I learned that expert practice makes you an expert. If I didn't feel confident in the arrow I wouldn't let it go. Same with guns.

Occasionally though I like to let loose and just blow things away. It's also an interesting bit of practice. But you don't gain much at all. I learn the most when I bring 50 rounds of pistol and 20 rounds of rifle and spend an hour shooting through that carefully. But it isn't fun, it's work.

One thing that's pretty popular in my group is a shooting competition while we're out in the boonies. Line up old cans or propane cylinders (empty of course) and proceed to take turns. Start left to right and most points wins. It's amazing how terrible most people are under pressure at 50 yards with a big *** scope even hahaha

That being said I'm the same. At the range i shoot roughly 50 pistol centerfire + 30-40 rifle a trip.

I augment with lots of .22 and air.
      Practice makes permanent.
Proper practice with proper technique while taking the time to learn from your mistakes makes you better.

Those people blasting away without evaluating the effects or trying to improve aren't making themselves better shooters anymore than driving to and from work makes someone a better race car driver.

i grab at least six ammo cans as some times i shoot more than one gun/caliber when i go to the range.
          pistol .45 .38/.357 9mm .45 colt .40
rifle way to many to list black powder, smokeless .22 up to 50 cal.

too much ammo? but it does take time to load up the truck.

and keeps me busy and off the streets, late at night in the reloading den.

Stress release. But it does not mean we should neglect other priorities.

Btw, practice makes permanent, not always makes perfect

EDIT: Snaps, the above post #17 beat me.

shooting hasn't stopped me from any nice meals / steak dinners etc., at all

i may not shoot 10's of thousands of rounds a year either - it's a happy medium with me, only one has nothing to do with the other budget wise

most of my handguns are 9mm, so i can at least buy the one caliber in bulk and save a little - don't horde ammo either, usually 3-5k on hand will suffice

i don't shoot my AR15 as much as i would like, fortunately i have doubts about being in a long range fire fight anytime soon, so the rust in my aim shouldn't be a life issue

Every time you take a dump after eating an expensive meal, just think of all the money you just turned into a pile a carp instead of enjoying shooting that much in ammo.

I shoot for effect till I get tired of it or bored. Rotating pistols and rifles and shotguns for trap keep it real.

More fun than other hobbies like bowling for example.

I was like you OP, I used to mag dump my rifles and get blisters from loading thousands of rounds each trip. Even bought a C-MAG back in '99 when the going rate was $400 for the pre-94 Crime Bill versions, just to dump ammo downrange. Ammo was so damn cheap, I didn't care. .223 for .20 cents a round, .308 South African Surplus was .20 cents too, .22LR was less than .02 cents a round.

Now I buy ammo online fairly frequently, but I go to Walmart before my trips and buy ammo there so I can blast that and stash my online ammo if I can. But I'm still shooting a few thousand rounds in each caliber a year, regardless.

If you're just blasting away to make noise, poke holes in paper and dirt, they yeah, you're probably just wasting money, and getting bored.

Most people who shoot a lot have a training purpose in mind. Basic skill building, competition, defense etc.

Some people love making noise and poking holes in stuff for entertainment and that's perfectly fine too. Personally, I'd rather spend $150 on ammo and a range day, that spending it at a decent restaurant on a meal for two.

All a matter of perference. No right or wrong way, as long as you do it safely.

How is this not a troll thread?

Just give your excess ammo and food to the collective?

I got the indoor range today to break in my new G19 and y o try out the new sites on my G30. I have not shot pistol in a range in a while and forgot what a drag it is and how much i prefer shooting outdoors. Anyways the two guys to the right of my lane e2axh showed up with 200 rounds of range reloads and proceeded to load their mags to the top and shoot shotgun groups. In the meantime I loaded up my normal 5 rounds per magazine and in a slow but steady pace proceeded to shoot Xs and 10s. I was maybe 25 rounds into my session when one of the shooters left the range for more ammo. He thrn proceeded to shoot another 200 rounds before I was done with my first 50. I heard him comment how he wished he could get more ammo. Now I am not some speed shooter who gets off 2 to 3 rounds in a second but I am not a bullseye shooter who takes a minute to break their shot. I realize but the time I am through 50 rounds I have achieved what I set out to do and that is reacquaint myself with my carry gun.

Now when I practice shooting my M1 or military bolt actions or Service Rifles I normally shoot a lot more. But that's because I drove 1 to 2 hours to shoot and its not often that I get to shoot at 200 - 300 or 600 yards. I probably put 50 through each of my wood guns and 100 to 150 through my SR.

Totally off topic, I just re-read "Jew without a gun" in your signature line. I read it years ago and it is still such a powerful read.

Back on topic, when I go to the range I shoot at least 300 rounds because I can and enjoy every shot.
