I do both. After spending many years shooting archery I learned that expert practice makes you an expert. If I didn't feel confident in the arrow I wouldn't let it go. Same with guns.
Occasionally though I like to let loose and just blow things away. It's also an interesting bit of practice. But you don't gain much at all. I learn the most when I bring 50 rounds of pistol and 20 rounds of rifle and spend an hour shooting through that carefully. But it isn't fun, it's work.
One thing that's pretty popular in my group is a shooting competition while we're out in the boonies. Line up old cans or propane cylinders (empty of course) and proceed to take turns. Start left to right and most points wins. It's amazing how terrible most people are under pressure at 50 yards with a big *** scope even hahaha
