I had a problem squirrel that took a liking to my attic and chewed a hole in the roof to get to the insulation. Even after i chased him out and boarded the hole up he started chewing another hole and was relentless. So on my day off when i heard him starting to chew on a third hole i went out and shot it with my pellet rifle. None of my neighbors saw it but had they seen it they would understand because I am sure they all have the same problems I do.

I've never heard of that law. People in Madera dispatch critters with pellet guns all of the time. I've never heard of anyone getting a visit from PD. I'm pretty sure you would have to check your local laws.

                  Good info here.

There are four species of tree squirrels in California (excluding the small nocturnal flying squirrel, which is not considered a pest). Of the four species, two are native and two are introduced from the eastern part of the United States. In their natural habitats they eat a variety of foods, including a wide range of seeds such as pine nuts and acorns, fungi, insects, bird eggs, and young birds. Squirrels can cause damage around homes and gardens, where they feed on a variety of fruits, nuts, and other crops and plants. They can also dig holes in garden soil or in turf, where they bury nuts, acorns, or other seeds. They can be a nuisance around structures by gnawing on telephone cables, chewing their way into wooden buildings, or invading attics. Tree squirrels carry certain diseases that are transmissible to people, and they are frequently infested with fleas, mites, and other ectoparasites.

Question: with owner's permission, would I legally be allowed to humanly dispatch these critters with a .177 cal pellet rifle I have?
You are clearly interested in doing what is lawful, so I would ask the law enforcement agency that has jurisdiction over the area where you are renting an apartment, and ask them if you are allowed to shoot a pellet rifle, and take ground squirrels. Some jurisdictions consider the firing of a pellet gun the same as firing a firearm. The last thing you want is to be charged with that crime.

I also say get a cat. They are the ultimate hunters, and they are fun to watch as they stalk their prey.

                      Another alternative:

Appears to be quiet, accurate, & effective. If the arrow doesn't leave your property, it may also be legal? Not sure about if a squirrel just happens to get in the way while you are "Target" shooting"?

And they do consider it a firearm. Just get a big, hungry cat at the pound. Throw it in the yard. Legal and effective.

Another possibility: If, from a safety & neighbor tolerance standpoint, one can shoot their pellet gun in the yard, one could find a spot, with a backstop, perhaps plywood or a heavy tarp or blanket, in case one missed a shot, & put out a dish of birdseed. Then one could wait, concealed as best as possible, & pick them off when they come to feed, similar to hunting ducks.

Or, one could put the dish of feed on a small table, just outside a slightly open door or window & shoot them from inside the house, which would minimize the noise & not be as noticeable to the neighbors. as mentioned, bring the feed in at night.

Containing any missed shots should be the primary consideration.

Please note, I am not recommending anyone do this, just describing the possibilities.
