Advised needed for pest problem

I'm renting an apartment in L.A. County and have access to a backyard where I recently got into growing my own garden. I've noticed squirrels have become pests here and dig up my root systems in order to dig down and burry their nuts, damaging my plants and flowers.
Question: with owner's permission, would I legally be allowed to humanly dispatch these critters with a .177 cal pellet rifle I have?

Is it a tree squirrel or ground squirrel...? Im pretty sure tree squirrels are a no go, but if no one sees you........

As long as it was a surprise and he didn't have any anxiety leading up to the lead/flesh encounter I'd say it's humane... ground squirrels be damned!

Plant catnip. I'm dead serious. I did this and every neighborhood cat comes in for a hit and chases away anything that moves.

Not in CA but probably not ..... however squirrels are super easy to catch in a live trap ....... then relocate shall we say ... but that may not be legal either ........... or just get used to planting "extra"

I think under ca law you can't shoot a pellet gun on property under 10 acres in city limits, check the law, pretty sure you can't legally, but whose gonna know?
