My biggest fear is that one day I will die and my wife will sell my guns for what I told her I paid for them.

Isn't marijuana supposed to be in a green house anyways?

I think the bigger issue is squirrels can be on the upper end of .177, best get a silenced .22 air arms to make sure

And pull your traps at night .... or you will end up with coons , possum ..... cats ...... skunks ....all kinds of crap.
If you're getting skunks .... toss a board with a larger foot print than the trap itself under the trap..... it will save on them digging up pounds of dirt and pulling it into the cage with them.
And to be honest .. my experience with trapping squirrels was a never ending battle ......they just kept coming

Trap and re-locate. Discharging a firearm in city limits could get you a stupid prize.

I have a .177 gas powered rifle. Based on my experience it might be a bit light for squirrels unless you are very close or can make head shots. here is an interesting site related to air guns. seems Ted is favoring the .25

As far as "Can I?", a lot may depend on your neighbors. My guess is that few to no people would mind if you were shooting rats, but the cute, furry little Squirrels may get a different response. I have read that poison leads to a long, painful death & other animals or pets may accidentally get into it.

My neighbor uses a trap which appears to do nothing but catch them one at a time. Basically, it appears to be useless.

Forgot about this, we had an adopted 18 pound killer cat, named "Sinbad"
He was 18 pounds of "Fierce", incredibly strong & fast. In the 20, or so years we had him he consistently killed at least one or two squirrels per day, in the summer time, even though he had all the food he wanted.

He lived in our wood pile for a winter. even with 6 feet of snow on the ground, he looked to be in good shape. My wife finally caved & adopted him. It was fascinating to watch him hunt, just like watching videos of the big cats in the jungle. He re-cycled a whole lot of squirrels, rabbits, & birds in his lifetime.

Depending on the OP's neighbors, a good killer cat might be as effective as a pellet gun.

Relocating a trapped animal in California is illegal. If you trap it, you must either immediately release or dispatch. A .177 pellet with dispatch a squirrel if you put the pellet where it needs to be. If you don't, you're gonna have a wounded squirrel either flopping about or running off. Thankfully, I don't live in LA, but I would bet it's against the law to discharge a pellet gun in the city limits. Also, if it is a tree squirrel, there is a defined season for them, and shooting or killing one outside of the season is a Fish and Game violation.
The easiest way to deal with squirrels and pests with a garden is to get some deer netting off of Amazon, cover your garden and be done with it. If you don't use netting you will have more than just squirrels eating your bounty.
