Colt is run by complete idiots. Look at the new A1 repros they're putting out for an insane price while Troy (love them or hate them) is doing it for a fraction of the price. Even Brownells now is cashing in on the booming repro market with affordable parts.

The retro market is big. All they have to do reproduce an EXACT copy of their M16, down to color and details, like NoDak and Brownells and a host of other small specialty companies do and keep it under $1000, they will make bank with all the Vietnam vets. But I'm afraid Colt is like the big car companies, to much dead wood and idea men out of touch with the market running the production line.

I just got a new Combat Commander and I'm glad I did. I keep reading others replies that Colt has crapped out on fit and finish. 100% not true on the gun I got or the 7 that I handled in the store.

I bought one at the end of the year just to have a Colt. Externally, things look great, but I'll say that internally it is a mess of burrs and bad machining. Probably the worst I've ever owned. All three that I checked out at the LGS showed the same issues. The front sight fell out after 50-rounds. It must be hit or miss. I wish I shopped where you shop.

No matter. It's been stripped and sent to Nighthawk. The only thing Colt when it comes back will be the slide, slide stop, plug and frame. I kept the slide stop, but only because I spent the hour to remove the machine marks and tune it prior to sending it in.

I too bought a colt defender. First time I pulled the slide back and saw the workmanship I freaked. It looked like a blind man took a grinder to it. Absolutely the worst looking stuff I'd ever seen. Looked like a bubba job. I sold it and bought a Sig instead.

It would be nice to own a gun from an American icon, but colt as we fantasize about has been dead for decades.

That's too bad hate to see any gun manufacturer go down, especially one with the history of Colt. I truly hope they can pull though and survive, new innovated management is needed. Cut the fat, down size and concentrate on a solid smaller lineup.

Colt's pattern of failure for the past 30 years is honestly kind of comical, and miraculous that they haven't simply fallen apart entirely already.

Re-engineered the AA2000 pistol to be a POS before getting it to retail, haven't come up with a new semiauto pistol since.

Their OHWS submission was an absolute joke.

Their "competition" ARs weren't even made in house, and neither were their "collector replicas"(which apparently weren't even the right color).

Haven't been able to come up with anything that could be called a modern service pistol in over 30 years.

Their M2012 bolt action rifles were just all off the shelf hardware possibly not even assembled in-house, in a crowded market sold by a company not known for precision rifles, as a high priced precision rifle.

Their .22lr rifles are just re-branded walthers.

Their snake revolvers have had pretty high demand from a possibly vocal minority for 10 years, did absolutely nothing with regards to marketing that they were even still available from the custom shop before they completely quit production, and refused to come up with anything actually new in terms of their revolver line up and simply abandoned it(only to just now try and bring back the Cobra).

Can't get AR-15s out the door and has to declare bankruptcy after the biggest civilian gun buying spree in the past 100 years(possibly ever) for no discernable reason(at least HK has the excuse of interference from the German government regarding their ability to basically print money by producing older designs in high demand).

When they finally do have a surplus of inventory, it's overpriced.

Wants to rely on their 901 rifle platform instead of anything actually accepted on the market as far as ARs in .308 go.

Gets undercut on their contracts by FN for what, 50% off? JFC, and of course they had no other military contracts unlike say.. FN that produces a wide variety of arms instead of just relying on one contract alone to prop up the entire business.

Colt shouldn't have survived past the early 90s.

It's sad to see a legendary US company fail, but their isn't another company that deserves it as much as Colt imho.

That one is not their fault. They can't.

They could have easily kept what they already had on the list - on the list; this is especially true since they haven't introduced any actual new designs since the All American 2000 or even the Colt Z-40 (technically not their own - just a branded CZ 40B but in DA only).

Likewise, they have the slate to manufacture and sell the one handgun that is their halo model, that is all things beyond what any other handgun manufacturer can meet (even if they do build a better gun than it) - and that "it" is the Colt Python.

And in most cases, due to the most popular barrel lengths for a target-quality revolver, it would be able to sell in CA without worry of having to meet the Roster requirements - any of them.

Releasing it in it's full quality form, without scrimping on materials, finish, and accuracy merely to meet a cost-reduction, would still see the gun sell, and sell well. As popularly sought as the Python still is due to mystique and legend bolstered by TV shows and lore, there is no doubt plenty of people would be up to shell out $2,800 for a gun that would likely cost Colt only $900 to $1,100 in production costs per gun to make (due to modern CNC/EDM, etc. taking care of the majority of the initial build-work).

The cost would be driven by the hand-fitting and hand-honing after the above, but would be worth the price.

But Colt is being stupid, and attempting to hock their "Cobra" at a time when nobody needs yet another basic small revolver with nothing special to offer other than it says "Colt" on the side.
