As far as I know the whole "don't let your mag touch the ground" taboo developed from the military switching from M14s and early M16s with 20 rounders to 30 rounders in the late 70s/early 80s. It was new and strange and so that FUD happened.
Magazine monopod is the best though. If your gun malfunctions from that, then there is something wrong with your gun and not the shooting position.
Honestly kind of shocked that this is actually still a thing people debate.
