    Compliance from another angle

I imagine you could but that's when the ATF steps in and says "oh and that too, you can't do that"

I just want it to be something easy for all to be able to do at home with basic skills that isn't going to create a possible full auto situation or unsafe situation. You know. Something that will separate the tax payer from the unlicensed high point CCW carrier in the eyes of the law. In the mean time I'll brace myself for all the high point owners I've just offended. You know who you are.

For the intermittent intrusion necessary for loading each round, just not worth keeping the silly doo-dads which contribute very little to how you will be using it anyway (including the pistol grip, about the only thing relevant that makes a mild bit of difference over a Monster-Man grip.).

Ugh; that people ever thought the FAB-10 was an answer still baffles me to this day.

If you can't drill a hole in aluminum then yeah this isn't for you. Weakening the receiver? What are you running polymer? You do realize the bolt and chamber are where the gas expansion takes place right?

Like I said, your choice. Not all of us are psyched about featureless. Especially if you compete out of state. Or even in state for that matter.

By all means, if you don't like it, don't do it!

I didn't even know what a FAB-10 was and quite frankly I regret having even looked it up...

The CA compliant Hera Arms CQR on the other hand... But you still can't even get on the wait list unless you know someone. And yes I realize that is not the CA version

By pressing the bolt catch you should be able to override the new spring and you're back to a semiauto mode of operation...

But good, I'm glad we are having this conversation. Lots of either or conversations and no working through alternative option.

Damit Michael! SHUT UP! Great! Now I gotta come up with a CA compliment bullet bolt catch because Michael ruined it. This is why we can't have nice things!

What if we just said you can't touch the button. Like "you can't shoulder that pistol brace"

But yes. Point Michael. I don't think I've ever fired a rifle with two hands on the receiver. I guess I don't watch enough Action movies.

Wouldn't it be easier to dump the AR and buy a bolt action?

Not if they were built on 80% lowers. And again, some people travel out of state to hunt with 6.5 or 308. So it would be nice to have a proper sporting rifle. This thread is meant as an exercise in options other than the obvious choices which aren't really choices.

At this point I'd just pull the gas tube flip the gas block hand cycle for a majority of my AR's that will live in my safe. Re install the gas tube in case SHTF. Go featureless on the one I shoot the most. [emoji20]

I can guess which side of the "It's a disabled semi-auto, not a built from the get-go single-shot" debate you're on. I'm on the opposite.
I meant, it is my opinion that...

Good on you for trying to stay compliant while thinking outside the box.

It's just pretty damn sad that it's come to this.

CA laws allows a firearm that is deemed to be an assault weapon to be rendered permanently inoperable in order to remain CA legal.

Permanently inoperable has not been fully defined under CA laws/regulations, but for the most part it means destroyed per BATFE specifications.

However, some people also look at it as meaning the way it function. So, making a semi-auto permanently inoperable would comply.
                            Example...
On a semi-auto firearm that operates via direct impingement gas system; would need to remove the gas tube and remove or plug the gas block and/or replace the barrel with one that is not tapped for a gas system.

Since your solution does not make the semi-auto operation "permanently inoperable", it could be considered a "broken" assault weapon because it can be readily restored into a semi-auto.

In the past, there has been arrest & conviction of person possessing a "broken" assault weapon (restricted featured non-functional semi-auto rifle with parts to make it functional stored nearby).
