Handgun registration has been required since 1991.
Anyone selling you a gun in California that they obtained legally after 1991 would WANT to go through an FFL to "get it out of their name" and into yours.

What you suggest could be done (and is done every day by prohibited persons), but there is a catch in California law....
Carrying a concealed handgun without a CCW is a misdemeanor.
Carrying a concealed handgun not registered to you is a felony.

I see this phrase used, and can't say I know exactly what it means.
    http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/

Guns not on that list can not be transferred by a dealer to a non-exempt person.
We CAN sell them private party if both the buyer and seller meet at the same FFL, but they can not be shipped in from out of state from a dealer or Gunbroker sale.

      an off roster handgun

      go here: http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/

hit FIND and it will list all the handguns that can be sold in California. If it's not on the list it's an off roster handgun.

In most cases possession can legally transfer in the state of CA only by using a licensed dealer who will take possession of the firearm, notify the DOJ of the transfer request, wait 10 days, and only return the firearm to either the purchaser or seller upon getting permission from the DOJ to do so. Even if the police take temporary possession of your guns they cannot return them to you without getting permission from the DOJ to turn them back over to you.

Other cases like family inheritance upon death or moving into CA require notifying the DOJ. Loaning a firearm to a non-prohibited person can only be for a short time. Even going away for a few months such as a military deployment and leaving someone else access to your firearms is against the law. As a result, if they run the serial and it comes back with someone else's information then you or they or both of you are likely getting investigated and/or charged with a gun related crime.

Unless you are law enforcement, you can only purchase handguns that are on a DOJ list of "not-unsafe handguns" which is known as the roster. ANY change to a firearm requires it to be re-approved by the CA DOJ or removed from the roster. Used to be made from gray plastic but now you use black? Reapprove or off the roster. Called it a BLASTER-5C but now the model number is BLASTER-5D? Reapprove or off the roster. Over the years approval or reapproval has begun requiring additional features like loaded chamber indicators and inability to fire if the magazine is removed.

More recently they began to require microstamping that identifies the firearm on every fired shell casing. No one makes this. As a result, no new handguns are being added to the roster and every time a current handgun is changed in any way it becomes illegal to sell in CA. We can't buy Gen4 Glocks, or any of the S&W M&P handguns, or lots of other guns that are available in other states.

Kinda. It isn't illegal just to own an unregistered handgun in CA. However, all current (as far as I know) legal means of buying, selling, giving, getting, bringing into the state, inheriting, etc. require notifying the DOJ and updating the database. The charge would be failing to follow the law regarding transferring or importing the firearm, and you also get an enhancement if you commit a gun crime with an unregistered firearm.

              "Gun Show Loophole"

is a leftist Bias Stream Media and political fabrication, designed to make it SEEM necessary for something that was perfectly legal for 240 yrs. And the world got along OK without. To now be demonized as something that only ignorant redneck babykillers do.

If leftist turds see something they don't like or agree with. First they hang an incorrect evil sounding LABEL on it.

Then they bombard the label into the minds of brainless sheeple through the BSM, until the sheeple actually believe there is something evil about the thing that has been incorrectly labelled.

Then they demand that their leftist butt puppet politicos pull out all the stops to make the thing they don't like or agree with illegal.

A ploy that has worked quite well for the leftists since they acquired the technigue from a Nazi name Goebbels. He was Hitler's Propaganda Minister.

Well now you started off all innocent-like, but there's where ya lost me.

Nowhere in any of those threads does a California resident say they bought a gun at a gunshow w/o a background check, or used a gunshow as a loophole to get an off-roster handgun, let alone stating they bought something as specific as a Gen 4 Glock.

I'm not exactly a wise man, but I can read.

Not to do with gunshows in particular, but once upon a time in a California far, far, away, private party sales didn't have to go through an FFL, and we didn't have a State-approved Roster of Handguns Certified for Sale, but not for many years.
I meant, it is my opinion that...

That would of been great, I could only imagine how nice laws used to be.

The only loophole is the empty space the ears of between most of our state legislators.

If you own a hand gun aquired prior to the registration requirements, you have no obligation to register it (excluding "AW"s).
