    1 Handgun....1 Long gun....

The worlds financial system has collapsed...

    Your family gone...

    Cars with no gas...

Homes are now targets for merciless bandits...

You must hit the road as a drifter with nothing more than provisions for 1.

    This is the apocalypse!

You're dressed and ready to go into your final journey, last stop is your own home safe to bring along 1 handgun & 1 long gun...

    Which do you choose?

Glock 26, because it's very concealable and it will take those high-capacity magazines that you find... in other states. 9 mm going to be the way to go because I think you'll find it easiest to find ammo for in that type of situation.
Yes, full-size pistols can be more accurate and more comfortable to shoot but in this hypothetical two gun situation, that's what the Long guns for.

For me the long gun is a harder choice. I love the hard-hitting and versatility of the 12 gauge round ...slugs, buckshot, Dragon's breath, cut or wax filled cheap birdshot....etc.

but having a few extra rounds in your mag., that a AR or an AK can give you, might make all the difference.

Maybe a Siaga or other AK based semi auto shotgun.

or if I'm heading off into flat open country maybe something like an AR-10.

Why, do you know something we don't know OP ?

( overheard something at a poker game? )

Glock and AR would likely be my first gut reaction. But those would be boring (albeit practical) choices.

I'll go with a 22LR semi auto handgun. Ammo is light so you could pack out many thousands of rounds as opposed to significantly less centerfire rounds. Purely a weight thing.

Long gun - I'm thinking you'd still need to go the route of ammo availability and popularity. I'm trying to think of a reason not to go with something in .223, but I can't think of one. Guess I'll go AR then.
        .
        .
        .
or you could go with a revolver and lever action in the same caliber for ammo similarity (38/357, 44, 45colt, etc.)

            Glock 17
            Lightweight AR

Both easy to carry and maintain, parts and ammo are commonly available, combat proven.

Henry Big Boy Steel (.357 magnum) and S&W Model 60 (.357 magnum).

Different scenario -- one firearm only: Ruger GSR (.308).

Well, I own only 1 handgun and 1 long-gun: 1911 and a 6.5 Creedmoor precision bolt-action. But... I wouldn't want either of those in the situation you describe. I'd want a 9mm Glock and an AR15 with a decent scope.

SIG 226 and .223 bolt gun. FAL and M1A are too heavy and so is their ammo.
