ruger single six 5.5" 22lr/wmr, loaded with an eight round 22wmr cylinder by story and speer gold dot defense ammo. ruger 10/22 or marlin papoose 22lr rifle, with plastic stock and red dot sight. i might scavenge, or swap for, a shotgun at some point, but always keep the single six.

a 9mm bond arms derringer (with 3 extra barrels in 45lc/410, 45acp and 357/38 buried in the bottom of my pack) wrapped around my ankle doesnt count because you dont see it.

I'm roaming with my OPAP AK and my only pistol, a RUGER SR40. The wife will keep the AR due to weight. The Wingmaster is to hunker down when I return from foraging. If a perimeter was set up and it's "safe" enough, a Ruger 10/22 (need to buy one first)

A .223 would probably destroy most of the meat on a rabbit or a squirrel. If you're worried about weight of rounds, select a 20 gauge or .410. (You can get 2 - 50 rounds bandoliers too) And you still can't hunt birds

probably cause even if there are a lot of parts to break in AR15, it is so abundant in USA, finding a scrap AR15 around police, military, gun stores, random homes would make it a smaller negative.

for small game, while birds will be plentiful so will small ground game and ar15 is good at killing those critters.

and shotgun ammo weighs much more than ar15 ammo

per that post, for the same 100 rounds, 12ga is 4 times heavier (and that is using 63gr ammo, if we carry 55gr, it would be closer to 5 times) . that means i can carry over 400 rounds per 100 rounds of mixed shotgun ammo.
