Please send a copy of that receipt to the DOJ with a formal complaint.

Do that. Mail a copy (certified mail, return receipt) and you're done (having also outed them here. Maybe throw up a Yelp and Google review to make sure folks can find their pricing.

If the $15 won't hurt you, don't get tied up in it. Show up at 10 days and 1 second and pick that bad boy up and get on with your life.

its against the LAW charging over $35 for ppt! its not the $, its the principle and the cocky attitude of them to say go somewhere else when they are violating the LAW. despicable!! thanks for sharing, i will never go to place like that, EVER!. this is a personal decision on how far you want to make your point. if it was me, i can't let someone get away BS like this. i don't have a problem if they sell stuff at high prices, its his business he can set any price BUT when the LAW clearly states you can only charge $35 and he goes to say its $50 or you can go somewhere else?? I can't let that go if it happened to me.

I suggest holding off on anything with your name on it until after you do the pickup.

Agreed. It isn't about the $15. That's the cost of a dinner for 1 person. Not a big deal. It's the principle of the matter. I recommend that you do a negative review followed with a link to this thread. I would also report them to the DOJ.

after you take possession, report them to the DOJ and file a chargeback with your CC company.

Don't worry about that. I'm not going to do anything to give them an excuse to try to hold on to that gun.

I had to double-check the date of your post to be sure it wasn't 12-07-2003 or so, because that's about the last hold-out date when most FFL's got wise to charging anything more than $35 would have consequences.

If they are charging that now, they KNOW it's neither right, nor legal. this is no longer an unknown territory. It's been discussed so many times here, with bulletins by the BOF/DOJ, consumers, other websites, and more.

If some level of government had that information, what would they do with it? How would having that info benefit public safety? How would it benefit law enforcement?

So, the plot thickens. I called the other FFL in SLO, Four Seasons Outfitters and asked them how much they charge for a PPT with both of us coming in to transfer a rifle. Just wanted to check and see if the claim from the rangemaster guy about the going rate was accurate.

                    The answer: $40.

So, what the heck is going on with this? Is the Attorney General's office been showing willful disinterest in enforcing this law so shops think they can get away with it?

That place went down hill quick after Rob sold it. I won't shop there anymore. I would rather pay a little more at 4 Seasons and get good customer service. Its only a few blocks away and has people who actually know what their talking about most of the time.

I keep on reading it's against the law to charge over $35 for PPT. Apparently it is not since there are many FFL charging over $35. I understand the frustration and principles but instead of complaining, just take your money to another FFL of your choosing. That's what I did. Just shop around. The increase PPT may be due to the end of the year and with tons of PPT, FFL probably wants to maximize their profit.

35 is max under state law. Pick up your gun at the 10 day mark. Make a formal complaint with the DOJ. Especially if they are "showing" one thing on the receipt and pocketing another... that would be fraud.

You can do a chargeback after paying for service. I just did it with Sears and their non-existing "service" they did on my washing machine/dryer.

Pick up the gun. Then call Cal DOJ and report them at a minimum. This illegal activity needs to stop...

Where on the legal books does it actually outline what shops are legally allowed to charge for a PPT? If it's in writing somewhere, why not just print that out and bring it with you whenever you do a PPT?

I called up the FAQ on the Attorney General's website on my phone. Told the guy it says right here with a reference to the actual legal code on what they're allowed to charge.

The response was: "It's $50. If you want to go somewhere else you can."
