I would register it first before taking off the BB, but yeah as far as I understand it this is correct.

There is nothing in the law as written and passed that precludes that action.

We do not yet have the actual procedural documents from the DOJ.

Yes, I would absolutely not want to get caught in 2017 with an unregistered featured build without a BB. Even though the BB is legally meaningless, it could still result in a ruined weekend.

Registration... Don't do it. Or you'll suffer the consequences.

Research what happened in the UK with hand gun registration.

I am really amazed that a 8 yr forumer with almost 1000 posts would be asking this kind of question.

^ ^ Agreed!!! These laws are complicated, many seasoned vets aren't even clear about them. Most members on the forum like online associating anyway, so asking / answering questions is normal.

Featureless AR may "not" be registered - this is what I've been hearing. The bigger question is HOW to make ARs "featureless", yet functional, comfortable, and less ugly.

To make things interesting, here's a scenario:

You've a 2016 CA complaint AR - you add a .22LR upper to your multi-Cal lower. You keep the gun in that (.22LR) format mostly (but you also own the 5.56 original upper that's sitting seperatly in your safe).

Does this make any difference to the firearm??

You could throw a grip fin on it and keep the BB but there's really no point to that is there?
A grip fin does nothing on a pistol.

I wouldn't want to have parts with no legal use. There have been convictions for attempted possession of an AW for disassembled guns.

I know, I was trying to stress the fact that an AR pistol can't be featureless.

"You could throw a grip fin on it and keep the BB but there's really no point to that is there?" I interpreted as meaning you could keep the BB next year without registering (even though that isn't what you said).

How about an 80% pistol? Do I need to engrave it first, then register it?

featureless will also get banned eventually

What will you do when they ban that as well? And they will ban it. It's just a matter of time...
from my observations, it seems like they make a new ban about every 10 years, maybe sooner? if it's a state ban or city ordinance ban

my guess, featureless is safe for now, but in 5 - 10 years they will get those too just like everything else

at first they said you can keep your standard cap mags as long as you bought them before the ban, then about 10 - 15 years later they changed that too, they started with city ordinance bans in certain areas, now it's a state wide ban.

So basically on 1/1/17 you can officially remove your AR bullet button and AK mag lock cover thingy and go to range!!! Oh but....on 1/1/17 before you go out to range you must go online and register them whip out your credit card and pay the fee to have them now as assault weapons, print copy of form and waive it in front of range master and undercover agents wanting to inspect your weapons who will be trolling ranges now, because some dope dufus heads will take off their bullet buttons on 1/1/17 thinking they have whole year to register them and actually go online in September 2017 to finally register them... scary as they will be arrested for possession of assault weapons
                              ...it's for the kids...

DOJ doesn't even have the registration form on line yet. They can't even figure out how to set up and regulate a pot dispensary. And they can't tell lemonade from ice tea, either.
