If it's a featured/BB'd gun now, it's an AW 1/1/17. There's no law that prohibits making it more assaulty, or saying you can only make it more assaulty once it's registered.

my guess, featureless is safe for now, but in 5 - 10 years they will get those too just like everything else

at first they said you can keep your standard cap mags as long as you bought them before the ban, then about 10 - 15 years later they changed that too, they started with city ordinance bans in certain areas, now it's a state wide ban.
How is it possible that a handful of idiots make ALL the RULES, and people with common sense have NO say in it? Aren't we the ones who elect those representatives? And how is NRA helping? WHAT's TRUMP's stand on this stupidity? We don't even have a single representative in Sacramento, who could have a LOGICAL talk with the "idiots" making such rules. Cosmetics of a gun don't change a thing when a human is shot by a 5.56 cal.

I'm Okay with the 10 rounds limit - after all, most of us use our guns for sporting purpose. We don't need a 100 round drum (although a criminal would get exactly that).

Here's a common sense question to be asked - HOW many firearms bought legally, and with bullet buttons (or other CA complaint features) were used in a CRIME????? Even if the answer is 1, 2, 3, .... I bet it's A LOT LESS than 9mm & 45 handguns used in gun violence. What does that tell us - We legal gun owners don't commit killings, our firearms are purely for SD, HD, and sporting purpose only. That's like banning cars to prevent DUI & distracted drivers - try that...

Most shootings happen due to unbalanced mental people, extremists in US, etc. How about we START SCREENING Heavily (in detail) every person who comes to US? How about medical records, and how about some mandated training classes/course? Those would be some Pro-active steps, instead of "change the stock, pistol grip, flash hider" to make a gun less lethal... If I paint mine Pink, would it be any less lethal, cuz it "LOOKS" less lethal? Would getting shot by a Mini 14 be less lethal than an AR? (both using 5.56 cal)

Monsterman grip and an ambi safety.

Changes the ergos to be more in line with a traditional sporter and you can still thumb the safety. No Kydex "fin" to get "lost" or "broken off" on its way to the evidence locker.

I'm still up in the air on whether or not I'm going to go ahead and convert it to an A2 tribute with PG and register or just leave it featureless.
Honestly, the biggest thing in favor of going featured isn't so much the PG, but the ability to swap my FSC556 comp from my .22lr to the A2.

          Or sooner.

Featureless was on the table last spring but died in committee.

The legislature is now emboldened by their perception of overwhelming public support with the >60% passage of Prop63.

          They'll be banned by 2020.

I think 2020 is being optimistic

They will try again in 2018 and seeing how overwhelmingly prop 63 passed they might just do the same thing by putting in on the ballot. California sheeples will vote for the ban while having no idea what it's really about.

I got my Mini-14 this year and I'll get a M1a next year. Nothing is safe in this state!

Register before the end of 2017, or, BEFORE Jan 1 2017, convert to featureless or a fixed magazine that meets the 2017 definition.

At this time, we are unclear on #3. It appears that the new laws are not changing anything WRT shotguns because the language describing an assault weapon was not changed.
I suspect that we will not know with any certainty until there is a test case.

SKS remains unchanged as it is inherently featureless. The "with fixed magazine" was specified to exempt a particular type of SKS from the original ban. That language has not changed.

No changes on rimfire rifles, they are and will remain exempt from AW laws.
Rimfire pistols are not exempt and the new laws will impact them.
How so.....will it effect my Browning Buck Mark pistol???

titan2, no evil features so it isn't an AW. If it had a threaded barrel it would be.

                    Yes.

In order to register it, it must be properly engraved/marked.

Markings must be to a minimum depth of .003 inch and in a print size no smaller than 1/16 inch.
Markings must use Roman letters (A, B, C, etc.) and Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, etc).

                    Markings must include:
                    1) Serial Numbers (can not be just a name, must contain numerals)
                    2) Model
                    3) Caliber
                    4) Manufacturer's name
                    5) City & State where the Manufacturer is located

Since you made the receiver, you are the manufacturer.
So, your name (first & last) and city/state needs to be engraved on it.

My bullet button Ca compliant AR becomes an AW 1/1/2017.
I have until 12/31/2017 to register and pay a fee, or make it
                      featureless/fixed magazine? Is this correct?
If I bring my AR to a class or match in NV, can I legally bring
                      it back to CA?

                        Perseverance, you are correct.

Once it's registered as an AW you can legally take it out of/back into the state.

The exemption from the law next year is only for possession, not transport, import, etc.

Hey Bob, not to be too nitpicky but I think some of the steps are out of order. True, in 99 cases out of 100 nothing "bad" would happen using the process you listed but in that one exceptional case it could lead to a felony for someone I think.

The issue is that you are removing the bullet button before the other evil features. There is a grace period from 1-1-17 to 12-31-17 but that is for rifles that HAVE a bullet button. The law banning the creation of a CA-defined Assault Weapon has been in place for years, and no grace period for violating that law exists to my knowledge. By removing the BB, you are in fact (at least for a few scant minutes) creating a CA-defined assault weapon, which is a felony.

Again, supposing you complete the transformation before anyone besides yourself sees the in-progress build, no harm should come, but there's always a chance someone will get that far into it and something will happen - could be anything from a house fire, sudden heart-attack, interruption - yes, unlikely events, but possible and plausible events. If it's possible to do it the "safe" way by removing the evil features first, that is obviously the preferred route. I was helping someone with an AR build this past weekend and the issue came up. They were about to put the grip onto the lower and I called out the need to install the BB first as a technical compliance issue. Would anything bad have happened? In this instance, likely not. But that person may go on to help others in the future, and I wanted to point out the right and proper way to do it "by the book". This might prevent them from getting themselves or someone else into a sticky situation somewhere down the road.

So, what's the deal with AR Pistols?

They don't have a collapsible stock.
The birdcage flash hider can be changed with a compensatory easily. Even keep the bullet button.
But WHAT about the Pistol Grip - it IS a pistol, so has to have a pistol girp.

Any thought on how to avoid Registration on these...???

They also have a magazine that attaches outside of the pistol grip.

It is not possible to go featureless on an AR/AK pattern pistol.

                                Fixed magazine or register.
