I was out shooting in TN when a group of MTN bikers came bombing out of the forest directly into my line of fire. Fairly irresponsible of them but they seem to have a sense of entitlement to them in regards to the trails in the woods. One of them even had the nads to call the Sheriff, who gave them a stern lecture about the difference between marked trails and unmarked trails and how hunters and shooters were in the woods and they may not be so lucky next time. The entire time the bikers were playing the "but we have every right to be here, its public land" to which the Sheriff replied that for certain they did have a right to be there, as did I and my bullets, it was up to them as to how much they trusted my marksmanship if they chose to be downrange.

I'm a cyclist myself. I shoot too. If you were shooting in a good spot, and they were riding unmarked trails, aint no fault there. Not yours or theirs. If they get hit, then its pretty much like stepping into a street, right in front of a bus. Unintended consequence from their overt action.

we dont need new laws to control this. just better education. man, its not hard to realize bullets can travel miles.

You would think. But last time it happened I rode over and talked to them. Guy claimed he was a NRA instructor teaching a shooting class. Had set up a bunch of steel targets right at the start of the trail head so the whole trail was downrange.

Guy said, "I am a NRA Instructor and this is public land. You have no right to tell us where we can shoot."


I asked to see his instructors card at which point he called me every Clinton name in the book before telling his "class" "Come on we will go shoot where there are less a-h...s."

I opted to remain quiet and let them leave.

Irresponsible shooter. The riders might want to take an airhorn with them next time and blow it when they hear gunfire. That'll get their attention.

I have often considered letting them see what the muzzle flash of a 10mm looks like, but the wife always reminds me someone has to be the professional.

A shooter always has the ultimate responsibility to insure his rounds do not harm anyone or damage property. Others in the outdoors, hikers, bikers, camper ect are responsible for their own safety, which should include a contingency if they enter upon an area where someone is shooting.

I have been shooting twice where I encountered someone else, and both times I was shooting in a safe direction, which was away from the person, and both times the other person thought I was shooting at them. One time was on my grandfathers 8500 acre ranch, and the other person was my cousin's husband. He fully accepted my explanation that I was not shooting in his direction. The other time was in the wilderness in Wyoming, and two men in a fishing boat beached their boat and came at our group in an angry manner, when they saw that our group was firing at targets 90 degrees away from the lake, they quietly accepted that we were not shooting at them and left.

My point with the two incidents above are, when some people hear gunfire they just assume their lives are in danger.

I've come across the same situation at Steele Peak. Twice!

People setting up at the bend of the trail and shooting on the same line as the road. We were set up on the opposite side of the road and heard the crack of the rounds going overhead. They were shooting at a cluster of rocks and the ricochets were going right at us. The second time it happened when we went over to ask them to shoot at the mountain and not along the road. They were a bunch of Latinos with every one of them wearing a wife beaters, drinking 40s, and shooting with the pistols sideways. They said "We're almost done, we'll stop in a few minutes." We packed up and left.

I had two pre teen kids on dirt bikes drop down my 600' hill that was my backstop while I was shooting on my backyard range, directly at them. It happened so fast. They said they were lost. I let them shoot the PTR 91 to let them know what they were riding into.

While I do agree the shooter is in the wrong for not being able to see his backstop and or where his bullets are going, having had quite a few crack close to my head in Iraq, it doesnt seem like they are that close base on the cracks, but it could be the poor audio. A close one will involuntarily make you try to climb up inside your helmet LOL
