I recall telling my buddies to separate the guns and ammo back in the 70's. When we used to pack up the station wagon back then to go hunting we always separated the two and locked up the ammo.

The NRA says ammo should be in a seperate container for interstate transportation

Federal law does not restrict individuals from transporting legally acquired firearms across state lines for lawful purposes. Therefore, no federal permit is required for the interstate transportation of firearms.

Any ammunition should be stored in a separate locked container. Title 18 Part 1 Chapter 44 s926A

But the quoted law section doesn't say this
      Here's the law link

I've been trying to learn the source for this "law". I got in a discussion with a CHP officer friend of mine about this - he swears it's in the law, but doesn't feel obligated to cite the law (since he knows the law)

Which is how BS like this spreads - "I read it on the Internet".

The above is incorrect - the ammo can be in the case WITH the firearm, it just can't be IN the firearm.

FUD!!!! This is how crap information gets spread, by some guy saying it like he is an authority on the subject, but having no idea what he is talking about and providing no citation to back his claim.

Learn how to properly prepare, pack and declare firearms and ammunition in checked baggage when flying. Review TSA rules, airline policies, and legal requirements.

Small arms ammunition, including ammunition not exceeding .75 caliber and shotgun shells of any gauge, may be carried in the same hard-sided case as the firearm.

Pretty certain separate containers are required for interstate transport under FOPA

56huck---Your CHP friend is wrong. He would need the code number if he wanted to cite someone and he will never find one. He would be correct in stating the Mag or cylinder cannot be loaded and in the pistol. But a loaded mag/cylinder can be in the same container(locked gun case) as the pistol.

MotoFahren---What type of flights are you speaking of?
I know for international flights to South Africa(and I believe other African nations) ammo must be in a separate locked box( with a TSA lock to keep the USA people happy) in your check in bag. Once you get to SA you have to remove it from the checked bag and it goes separate at no additional cost. There is also a weight limit on ammo.

To drive around in the USA you do not have to have your ammo separate from your firearms and it does not have to be in a locked box. However some certain areas/cities and such may have more restrictive laws. Also in some states you do not even have to have a pistol in a gun case while driving. Sorry to say Ca is not one of them.

That's funny, since the most-quoted source that sez it's okay is the CHP website.

I will be traveling to California and want to carry my weapon. I currently have a concealed weapon permit. How can I legally transport my weapon while driving through the state?

California law does not recognize concealed weapon permits from other states; therefore, they would not be held valid. If you wish to transport a handgun during your California visit, it should be carried unloaded in a locked container. In the absence of a suitable container, you may secure the unloaded handgun in the locked trunk of a passenger car. Ammunition may be kept in the same container or trunk, but the handgun must remain unloaded with no rounds in the cylinder and no loaded magazines in the magazine well.

If you have additional questions, contact the California Department of Justice at (916) 227-3703.

Pretty certain you will never find a citation to back that up.

Here is the safe passage provision of FOPA to get you started:

                  18 USC 926A

Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.

Hmm so it sounds like after 25 posts the origin of this mystery remains to be solved. Really curious how it all started. Like trying to find patient zero of a virus outbreak

Because it is so prevalent in those forms people began to assume it was a law.
It was a super-extra-special-we-got-lawyers safety tip that the masses turned into a requirement.

I started it. Once i thought it was silly to pack ammo and guns in same bag.I then said "a seperate container must be used."
