Where did "ammo in separate container" come from?

I hear this a lot... People saying that ammo must be stored in a separate container than the firearm. But no matter where I look, I cannot find the law that says so. So where exactly are these people getting this idea from? I mean it had to have come from somewhere, right?

It comes from the safety recommendations found in every gun manual and the NRA.

Because it is so prevalent in those forms people began to assume it was a law.

Also possibly from TSA firearm transportation requirements, ammo can't be in the locked case with the firearm.

I swear I remember about 5 years plus ago having gone to the DOJ website or similar and reading as well that Ammo was to be in a complete separate container. I could just be remembering exactly what they want me to though.

There are some other states where this is or was required.

That's not true at all. I fly with my ammo and gun in the same locked container.

That's a possibility too, some states have random laws that may be even more restrictive than CA. I think the idea was to be as safe as possible for interstate travel... of course true interstate travel is protected under specific conditions by federal law but generally requires you not make any extra stops or deviations to be covered.

Same people who say anything less than .45 is ineffective.

Hmm maybe I was out of state when I searched it, very possible.

I heard it from a French model on the internet.

I consider .50 AE sufficient for fighting my way to my .50 BMG.
