^ Absolutely RedFord150, you could go that route, especially if you're SHTF plan included any bicycles but you wouldn't get the fullface protection Nor would it be California legal if you needed to borrow or had a motorcycle. having a motorcycle helmet while riding a bike just makes you look Mr. super safety.
And some skateboard helmets LOOK exactly like swat gear helmets. And that's something I don't want to look like If I'm trying to be the gray man.

Most importantly, if you read my input from above, bicycle helmets are not "redhead" rated!
    (ask her how I know.)

          One is none...

Get two of them...wear a bigger one on top of the other one

Yeah if we get invaded by a foreign army and frag grenades/stuff blowing up becomes commonplace, it might be handy. Short of that, it would be more likely to save you at the range in the event that a ricochet came at your cranial area. That said, don't mess around with crappy second rate eye protection. Get the ones with the impact tested polycarbonate lenses. Revision makes good stuff.

SHTF/bad neighborhood paranoia(I've done this), a concealable vest is the one you want. Unless you've dug into the compound and aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Then an argument could be made for some web gear to hold ammo, water, etc. You can get one set of armor and multiple carriers, if you're so inclined. The concealable/gray man one stays on unless WW3 arrives at your doorstep, announcing itself many hours in advance, of course.

Exactly right^ You might be able to pick up your gun in time, but a vest and helmet? Pfft.

SHTF? Maybe useful, but I would argue that training, practice, and ammo are much better investments.

In fact, I would argue that a CBRN gas mask is a better investment than a helmet.

So Mr Smith, you were in fear for your life?

                    Yes

But you took the time to put on a bullet proof vest and riot helmet before you shot?

                    Yes

Doesn't sound much like self defense to me.

Now SHTF might be a different story.

If you are going to get one get the one where you can attach NOD's to. That way it serves a dual purpose. But if you are looking for a regular 'ol helmet just to wear its kinda weird and overkill and not practical.

To fight a dragon, the knight has a sword and a shield

you have the sword, so why not get a shield...

Many level 2a and 3a disappear to the casual observer under clothing....

                            Helmets... pass
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT

I have a US steel pot helmet with WWII USMC cover to go with my Garand and stuff. It's basically a heavy duty hard hat. All kinds of workers wear hard hats.
