DD has nice lifetime warranty. Not sure about the others.

In your list the first five are all top tier rifles. The M&P is a decent gun but not top tier. You couldn't go wrong with any of the first five. Couldn't really go wrong with the M&P either but if top tier is important to you...

As for which is best, that is largely subjective. In that list I'd probably say Noveske but you will most certainly pay for it and, personally, I don't think there's a need to. Between the Colt, BCM and DD, they are all outstanding rifles. The Noveske might be just a little nicer but whether the price increase is worth it, only you can decide.

BTW...I own Colt, BCM and DD. Between the three I like the DD the best, followed by BCM. But again, no bad choices.

And sorry, as I am less familiar with the LMT but by all accounts, it's an excellent gun too. Were it me, I'd go with the DD and put the rest of the money toward an Aimpoint T1.

Also, there is no definitive best. It's very subjective. I wouldn't even waste your time trying to figure that out. You've got several quality choices. Figure out which one you like by either features or price point, buy it and don't look back. You could probably also add another dozen top tier rifles to this list. There is not shortage of them. You've got a decent list. Try to narrow it down from there. Adding more will only make your head spin.

Buy daniel defense, bravo, or LMT. Use the money that you would have left over from a noveske and buy ammo+mags or a quality optic. DD has lifetime warranty, and their rifles can be found much cheaper than advertised at local gun shops.

On that list Daniels Defense and Noveske have the best barrels. Everything else is about equal. The barrel is the heart of the gun. LaRue is a great gun. BCM is OK. LMT is good not sure on their barrels.
I would personally, if I were buying a new gun complete, buy a REV Arms or Cobalt Kinetics. Both are superb rifle far beyond basic accuracy and reliable function.

Honestly, your requirements are just as easily served with a 450$ AR Stoner kit and lower from Midway, as any halfway decent AR will meet your needs. If you want premium though, the standards are being raised

LMT or Noveske if you have to buy a completed rifle.

Thanks all for the advice. I'm beginning to lean towards a DD, but that's TBD.

I found this article which seems to have some good, basic advice:

Choose the best AR15 the first time with our Buyer's Guide. You want data? Specs? Sexy gun pics to *inspire* you? We got you boo. Welcome to The New Rifleman.

In the article, the following points are touted as being important things to look for:

High Pressure Tested bolt and barrel
◦Magnetic Particle Inspection of bolt and barrel
                ◦Shot-peened bolt
                ◦Gas key properly staked
                ◦Mil-Spec 11595E Barrel Steel (or 4150 steel)
◦Chrome lined barrel (unless your buying a stainless steel or nitrided barrel)
◦M4 feed ramps (the modern standard)
◦5.56 NATO chamber (alternative: .223 Wylde)

                Are these good guidelines?

And thanks again. My education in firearms is expanding. Good stuff.

Another question: Which length gas system do y'all feel is best? Carbine, mid, or rifle? From what I've read, the carbine length can be roughest on the action and rifle length the easiest. But is seems a mid length is popular because it's easier on the action than carbine length but it doesn't force you into a longer barrel like the rifle length system.

It'll be fun finally getting an AR15 into my hands. The last time I shot one was in basic.

I would personally never own a chrome lined barrel again, because I do not shoot full auto, I know how to clean my gun, and I desire better than .mil spec accuracy

Melonited barrels seem to be the new hotness, and are giving outstanding accuracy with good life.

Everything else you listed is what I consider normal, and is not a measure of a high end rifle.

What you are asking for really is just a standard rifle, and so pretty much anything will do. If you are really looking for a solid performer though, The new Armalite "3Gun" rifle is an amazing value, and will shoot better than most others you listed out of the box for less money. It comes with a Timney trigger, proper comp, etc. that most other gun in the price range will not have. The REV Arms guns are medium priced but thier accuracy and soft shooting if hard to match.

I know the choices are amazing these days, so hard to choose, which is why I own so many...

Also if your in the Bay area I will let you shoot a couple of my ARs and you can see for yourself the difference in "feel".

                          Hey Eugene,
If you are going by those guidelines, you will be building your own AR.
And if you change your mind and end up building it. I have all the tools and can guide you through it.
In general, those are good guidelines.
Stay away from fluted barrels as it looks like you are going for quality.
223 Wylde is nice to have and 556 NATO is built for higher pressures than a 223 chamber.
So at least 556 if you don't see a 223 Wylde you like.
Are you coming out to Reed's next Tuesday?

DD or BCM, best bang for your buck.
