So you went in there with some B.S. scam about consigning you gun, knowing it was overpriced and after wasting his time, your pissed because you got a reality check. Who's the douche?

The truth lies somewhere in the middle of each extreme; in between the OP and Pardini's honest post...

Facts are facts... and the fact IS... your gear will always get lowballed if offered to the LGS. They need to turn a profit.


hermosabeach is right. Local sellers may be all we have left, if the "left" gets their way. VOTE!

For example, I patronize one store to purchase my firearms; new and used. I don't always pay the lowest price, but sometimes I really score on some very clean, little-used, iconic firearms. They're a good group of people that work there, even if they are sometimes rather blunt with no0bs. Get to know these folks before you waddle off in a big ol' huff.


Now, building a custom bench rig! is awesome... but it's like building a race car. You will NEVER get back your initial financial investment... but you WILL have a lot of fun along the way, using it.

Stopped by a local shop today just to see if there was anything new and interesting that could catch my eye because the shop is under new ownership and management. It's a small shop and there was only two guys working there, one of which is the new owner. I was talking to his worker and asked if they take consignment guns to which he replied yes, depending on what I had. (I am playing around with the idea of selling my Remington 700) I explained that I had a custom Remington 700 chambered in 308 that is really set up as a bench rest rifle. The owner perked up and asked what I wanted to get out of it and I told him a dollar amount, to which he immiedietly said " you'll never get that!"

I was kind of surprised at how he said it, and without even knowing the details of the rifle. His worker was cool about everything and said that they just don't get the clientele there for something like this priced over $1000. That is an acceptable answer, but for the owner to be a complete douche about it and tell me that he has 25 years in the auction business and that I can never get what I want without knowing what I had is bad business.

Needless to say, he won't be getting any of my business. There are many other shops around that treat their customers with repect. I can't imagine this guy stays in business too much longer.

Rant over. Sorry it's so long.

Sorry, but you are easily and unnecessarily offended. You couldn't shrug and say, well I disagree, can we try it for a month and see what offers we get? Sheesh, everyone is so touchy these days....

I realize that the $2500 is a bit of a stretch, and I understand that everyone, including me, believe their rifles are worth more because of how we take care of them; but like anything, start high and work your way down. I wasn't really going to put it in the shop on consignment, I was just curious and for him to say it the way he said it was the most irritating. Not necessarily the content of what he said. If it doesn't sell for my bottom dollar, like some have said, I'll just keep it.

I paid $2500 for my 700 in .308. Here is what I bought:

Sorry but, you won't ever get near what you're asking for your's unless, you find a sucker and are willing to screw someone. Hell, just the optics on mine are worth more than your complete package. You'll be lucky to get more than $1200 for yours. Good Luck with your sale.

I think used stock guns can be a great find...from my perspective at least. Because it's used, it's normally (depending on the seller and how used it is...or the "rare" factor...love that when it's in the subject line, immediately tells me the seller is going to ask for more than it's probably worth as he/she is promoting the "rareness") less expensive than a new version of the gun.

Additionally, because it's stock (and would need to be in great condition), I get to do whatever I want to customize it and I don't have to undo someone else's work before beginning mine (that's usually when you find out how well upgrades were or weren't installed).

But to each their own.

I did see in the OP's listing that the original post has $2.400 OBO listed (as of this moment) and a few threads down he has "price lowered" and the price is $2,500. Interesting. I think that rifle will see a few more prices changes before being sold...or it's going back in the safe as is so commonly stated.

I've been incredibly lucky with buying used guns. I've been able to make great returns on them, so I'll always consider buying used. Nothing is wrong with used firearms, just as long they've been taken care of. I find it hilarious when people lowball you because a weapon has had multiple owners.

...is true. From what you described, your in $1,000 territory. I see a lot of add-ons, but nothing that is truly "custom".

Modern bolt actions once designated used, even if still like new, are the fastest depreciating firearms from the moment purchased. Add a bunch of dress-up gobbledy-gook, and you have just done a further disservice unless it's truly custom or all mechanically oriented like a better trigger or action.

Everything else is purely to the buyer's liking and can actually cause stink-eye from prospective buyers. Everything might be right, but the SWFA 10X super sniper scope could kill any interest; or the B&C stock, or the ??
