I apologize in advance....

Stopped by a local shop today just to see if there was anything new and interesting that could catch my eye because the shop is under new ownership and management. It's a small shop and there was only two guys working there, one of which is the new owner. I was talking to his worker and asked if they take consignment guns to which he replied yes, depending on what I had. (I am playing around with the idea of selling my Remington 700) I explained that I had a custom Remington 700 chambered in 308 that is really set up as a bench rest rifle. The owner perked up and asked what I wanted to get out of it and I told him a dollar amount, to which he immiedietly said " you'll never get that!"

I was kind of surprised at how he said it, and without even knowing the details of the rifle. His worker was cool about everything and said that they just don't get the clientele there for something like this priced over $1000. That is an acceptable answer, but for the owner to be a complete douche about it and tell me that he has 25 years in the auction business and that I can never get what I want without knowing what I had is bad business.

Needless to say, he won't be getting any of my business. There are many other shops around that treat their customers with repect. I can't imagine this guy stays in business too much longer.

Maybe he doesn't want to hear it from every customer who comes in claiming that rifle in the case is overpriced chit?

Seriously, taking up space in his gun case isn't worth it to him unless the owner of the gun is willing to list it at a price that will quickly sell. Key word quickly.

I agree and I understand he wants a quick sale. However, how can he make that determination without know what I had. That's the part that irritated me

While his method was a bit off putting I don't really blame him...$700 rifle. $300 optic, $400 stock....2.5k even with the extras is a reach. Might as well save a bit more and get a used AE. It's no different than people asking $1.5k for a palmetto AR covered in pictanny attachments and a chicom optic with the buzzword **custom/milspec** thrown in.

That's a highly sought after rifle so the fact that it's still available says you've priced it too high. It may be worth more to you, in which case you should just keep it.

Most people think their guns are worth more than they actually are.
He may have been taking into account the huge % he will get from consignment. Why would you do a consignment while you actively post here?

I watched one of the most popular guns shops in my area lowball a senior citizen with his old SS colt 1911. Gave him about $250 and took the guys spare ammo for free. Tells the guy they really are not worth much and old guy sheepishly sells his old military heirloom to the shop.
I watched and said nothing as I was picking up my previously purchased 700.
When old guy leaves, I ask how much he wanted for it sight unseen, and he declined telling me he'd clean it up and get a grand for it.
I told him, "You got a steel!"
He gave me a look. And I just let it go.

Anyhow, that is how you stay in business.
Someone has to pay for the electricity and so forth.

Not everyone is good at customer service. Which is clearly evidenced by your experience. The employee gave you an acceptable and appropriate answer. The owner? Well not so much!

Not everyone is good at what they do for a living. Just because he is an owner doesn't meant that he is good at customer service. Especially if he's a new owner like you say. Who knows what he did before this. He may still be figuring things out when it comes to direct customer contact.

Now don't get me wrong. I'm not sticking up for the guy. But just realize some people really do suck at what they do for a living. I wouldn't necessarily refuse to do business with the shop because of it. Now if you get that kind of treatment the next few times you go in there then that would be a good reason to never go back

The value of a gun is not what it is worth.

It is what it will sell for in today's market.

I realize that the $2500 is a bit of a stretch, and I understand that everyone, including me, believe their rifles are worth more because of how we take care of them; but like anything, start high and work your way down. I wasn't really going to put it in the shop on consignment, I was just curious and for him to say it the way he said it was the most irritating. Not necessarily the content of what he said. If it doesn't sell for my bottom dollar, like some have said, I'll just keep it.
