ATTN Humboldt Shooters- Simpson Range

yes this is a total thread jack... sorry.
Me and my family are planning a move to the Northern half of the state and were hoping for any insight into the Arcata/Humboldt or surrounding areas. With the market so crazy and the variety of real estate, its a crapshoot. We are looking for a minimum of 4-5 acres with house already built.

So I happened to read the post on calccw that was bashing calguns and
I went back to my source and got a update..

A few corrections to my story, since my friend updated me.

1) the foresters truck was not downrange as originally reported. They parked it behind the range and walked downrange into the range.

2) the lock wasnt broken. What happened was the door to the range was red taped with DO NO ENTER, and the moronic rangemaster that went shooting that day ripped down the tape and the tag that was on the door.

As for my sources, my close friend works at simpson, and has for over 20 years. After he heard what happened (from other co workers) and told me the story (which I posted earlier), he had the chance to sit down this week with Jack Eves who is the president of the SRA. He also mentioned alot of other names that are high ups in the SRA like Don Brandon, and a few others. He has known all these people for years and if he says this is what came right out of the horse's mouth, I believe him.


Jack told him specifically that the range is no longer public at the moment, it is private, the lock has been changed, there is no access, and that hopefully it will be open in the future. He said the only person that currently has a key to the range is Tom McDonald, who works for Simpson timber company (or green diamond, who is the parent company to simpson)

What is now happening (and for some reason other people (poogsdad on calccw?) think that this is top secret information that cant be released)) is that the insurance company for the range and thier attorney's sent Jack a list of concerns that he needs to reply to. Some of these are things like how come people can enter the range without going through the main door to the range, who controls the main gate into and out of the range, how the key/lock's work, etc,etc, and other safety procedures. Jack had to retain a attorney to look over his responses before he submits them to the Insurance company's attorney's, as he doesent want to become liable or have something come back to him or the SRA when he responds.

Why the guy over at calccw is so top secret I have no idea. None of this information is harmful to the insurance company or any party involved. I guess some people like to feel important by telling everyone they know the "real" story but they cant tell it
because of whaterver reason.

So im sure it will be at least a few months before this all gets taken care of and they can re-open to the public. I cant believe for a second that the range will be open by the end of January, as the simpson rangemaster (poogsdad) at calccw reports.

The bottom line? Yes, the range is closed, and yes, it shoud re open in the future.

PS> Kevin at the Shootery in Eureka told me that he also heard a rumor that they were no longer going to allow cowboy shoots at the simpson range as the insurance company didnt like the idea of people quick drawing from holsters and shooting. Not sure the validity of this info, but it seems plausible.

Thanks for the update. I've never understood what was up with the insurance company that they're suing. It seems like they have all sorts of problems with the range being open; I wish they would just hire another company that understands shooting ranges a little better.

Other than the fact that its a shorter range, I really like redwood gun club's range better anyway. Its only 200 yards, but thats plenty for most of what I do and hope to have to do someday.

Update from Poogsdad-

I was notified late last night that an agreement has been reached between the Simpson Range Association and the land owners, Green Diamond Resources.

Simpson Range will reopen within the next two weeks and a scheduled shooting event will occur on the 19th of February.

There will be some internal changes regarding range safety and operational requirements as well as a reduction in where rounds can be fired.

Some of the operational changes will occur immediately and the range will reopen as soon as a sufficient number of Range Masters have been re-certified.

Some physical changes to the range will also be occuring over the next six months as well to comply with the agreement between Green Diamond and the SRA.

I am reluctant to specific details at this time as some are still being worked out and others are not planned for full implementation until some time in the future.

As I stated previously, I will share what I can when I can with all of you.

Unfortunately, no 500+ yards. When range reopens the 300 yard line will be the longest range targets available. Green Diamond will be doing survey and development work beyond 300 yards fo some time.

Havent heard this yet, but if its true, what appeal is left to shoot there? A person might as well go to Redwood gun club, its closer and less of a hassel if your not a rangemaster. 300 yards...pffft...might as well call it a pistol range now.

Yeah, the signs and the tape that said, "Fallers at work, no shooting" didn't get the moron's attention. The 600 yard gong will be missed. Anyway, we should do our own version of an Apple Seed shoot at Manlia sometime.

Crap. The main reason I invested in a .50 cal was that I thought I could make use of the longer ranges at Simpson.
