First Time Shooting at Metcalf

When I lived in San Jose, I would occasionally go to Metcalf although it was a bit off the beaten path for me. In those days, I mostly shot pistols so I would go to indoor ranges. The last time I went was a few years ago (don't live in SJ anymore) and I took a semi-auto rifle. I thought it was a hassle because the range officers made you pick up the brass.

The range I currently go to has no such silly requirements. I love walking along the range and hearing the crunching of all those thousands of empty cases at my feet!

Before I take my new scoped guns to the range, I always take them to a local gun shop and have them boresight it first so I don't waste time/ammo on getting it on paper, and getting frustrated. Check the local gunshops to see who will do this cheap or free.

Metcalf makes you pick up your empties?

@SN: Just leave your rear sight at 100m... Should be enough for any trip, unless you're lucky enough to get onto a 200 yard range... Seems tough to get time on a 200 yd range here.

I'll second the 10/22... Kinda wish I had one. Maybe I'll get sick of loading my Marlin 60's tube and get the parts I need to convert it to a box mag (just need a stock and some parts off a 795...)

It was a quiet and fun day at the 200 yard range. The Zouaves had it booked and I took the opportunity to burn through some mix master ammo I wanted to get rid of.

I think the highlight of the day was finally knocking over one of the propane tanks. I'd tried to "walk" the shots up, but it's a pain to do with irons. I suppose I just got lucky.

Sunnyvale is the nicest place to shoot. Los Altos is a close second. Metcal is in need of renovation.

I haven't shot on Metcalf's 100 yard range in about 2 years, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's pretty funky now.

There was another guy on the 200 yard line yesterday shooting his Valmet. I was watching him fire a couple at the gong and I was wondering: "where's the brass ejecting?"

Then I got nailed in the stomach while standing a good 25, if not 30 feet to his 4 o'clock position!

Some upkeep is going on

Last time I was there the "red line" has been repainted for the 100 yard line. They always plant new flowers along the fence; looks nice.

The old picnic bench is gone from the parking low. Seemed like a noisy spot to eat lunch.

If your cant hit the black at 50 yards with an SKS, either the sight must be very off or you've got a flinch.

I would recommend shooting with a 12ga shotgun. To my experience, the best way to get rid of a flinch is to give someone something powerful. Lets them shoot that, then give them something light again. Then they think... hey this is nothing. Usually gets rid of the flinch.

To test someone in a flinch. Load a magazine with 3 rounds. 2 Live, 1 spent. After the first 2 rounds, and he fires the third. If you notice the shooter flinching. Needs more practice.

Try going to a range with rifles, and firing those. Those are usually in working condition and shouldn't be off.

Congratulations on your first time out!

I did a postal match from another board a few years back...Had my Yugo M59 with Winchester ammo, iron sights 100 yds..... 2nd place! The SKS can be accurate.

xenophobe: I vote Los Gatos 1st and Sunnyvale 2nd. Never been to Metcalf, been interested in the Zouaves.

One thing....Los Gatos is women friendly...clean bathrooms vs. porta-potty.

If you can't hold it for 1-2 hours after drinking a little coffee then you are a woman. Real men use what nature provides.

It's especially nice if you're introducing a women who's never shot before.

Well, I have two things about introducing girls/women to the sport.
1. I'm scared that they'll do a 360 swing of the rifle.
2. The recoil might surprise them so much that they'll drop it down range.
3. I'll get labeled as the guy who people wonder "When hes going to go postal" rather than "If hes going to go postal"

Maybe when I get a handgun, otherwise if I were trying to introduce a newbie to the sport I'd rather start them on a .22 or a handgun just so they don't drop my precious milsurp.

Hopefully someone can help sight my rifle soon as I have no adjustment tool, I've already got a 20 pack of stripper clips that are starting to work more smoothly as I've been sliding some casings up and down and practice stripping them.



Don't quite understand by what you mean about two 100 meter marks, perhaps if you have MS paint or something you can indicate what I need to be doing to make sure my sights arae zeroed in.
