So I got up at 6 in anticipation today, got a ride to Metcalf at 8 so my dad and I were there around 8-9. Signed the liability waiver (I probably should've made them sign one for me.
), range officers helped me set up and called a cease fire for me so I could go post a target, got back, waited for the go ahead, stripped the rounds into my SKS, pulled the operating handle, and pulled the trigger, and my first shot was a misfire. Otherwise it was very fun and even though I'm an abysmal shot seeing as this was my first time and I was glad to even make the paper, I managed to get a couple of consistent groupings, including a few in shots in the black. Otherwise I was too excited to really take my time and I pretty much blew 20 rounds shooting for the sake of shooting. Got about 40-50 percent of my shots on the paper, but to be fair, my first shots I forgot to zero in my rear iron sights.
On the other hand, were I trying to shoot at Hermann Göring, I would be confident that he'd have several holes in him, the SKS is good for what its meant for, hitting an enemy combatant and disabling him, not serving as a sharpshooter rifle.
So it was pretty great, Range Officers weren't nazis, had people firing high caliber pistols and lever action rifles to my left, and had people firing their own milsurps to the right, one Lee-Enfield and a Mauser (wasn't close enough to see what kind). If you were at Metcalf this morning, I was Number 3 at the 50 yard rifle range dressed in all black with the glasses from last year's Chemistry class. (Is it me or are sandbag rests available over there because I forgot to bring a towel so I had to shoot unsupported and my elbow was annoying me)
After that, went to Reed's to buy a nice case my rifle and a gun vise, stuffed myself with a Double Double and Animal Style Fries at In-n-Out, got my rifle cleaned up, and posted my target on my door. My first shooting experince will probably be the most memorable time of my life and a reminder of the best way to spend a Saturday. Only thing left now is to arrange for future get togethers with some of you now.
(May have to survey other locales such as Los Altos, Chabot or Sunnyvale later as well)

My dad did say he saw some promise in me when I actually managed to get a consistant grouping at one point and told me that I'd get better over time once I shot some more. The first day wasn't so hot because as you'd expect, I just wanted to shoot that sucker and was more consumed with excitment rather than taking my time and going for accurate shots. Of course next time I'll take my time and my elbow won't be killing me. After I get tight groupings at the 50, I'll move on to the 100 and probably at that point I'll be able to pay off my dad for all the stuff I've been buying and maybe I can get my hands on a Mosin Nagant and get used to shooting for the sake of accuracy.
