    First Time Shooting at Metcalf

So I got up at 6 in anticipation today, got a ride to Metcalf at 8 so my dad and I were there around 8-9. Signed the liability waiver (I probably should've made them sign one for me. ), range officers helped me set up and called a cease fire for me so I could go post a target, got back, waited for the go ahead, stripped the rounds into my SKS, pulled the operating handle, and pulled the trigger, and my first shot was a misfire. Otherwise it was very fun and even though I'm an abysmal shot seeing as this was my first time and I was glad to even make the paper, I managed to get a couple of consistent groupings, including a few in shots in the black. Otherwise I was too excited to really take my time and I pretty much blew 20 rounds shooting for the sake of shooting. Got about 40-50 percent of my shots on the paper, but to be fair, my first shots I forgot to zero in my rear iron sights.

On the other hand, were I trying to shoot at Hermann Göring, I would be confident that he'd have several holes in him, the SKS is good for what its meant for, hitting an enemy combatant and disabling him, not serving as a sharpshooter rifle.

So it was pretty great, Range Officers weren't nazis, had people firing high caliber pistols and lever action rifles to my left, and had people firing their own milsurps to the right, one Lee-Enfield and a Mauser (wasn't close enough to see what kind). If you were at Metcalf this morning, I was Number 3 at the 50 yard rifle range dressed in all black with the glasses from last year's Chemistry class. (Is it me or are sandbag rests available over there because I forgot to bring a towel so I had to shoot unsupported and my elbow was annoying me)

After that, went to Reed's to buy a nice case my rifle and a gun vise, stuffed myself with a Double Double and Animal Style Fries at In-n-Out, got my rifle cleaned up, and posted my target on my door. My first shooting experince will probably be the most memorable time of my life and a reminder of the best way to spend a Saturday. Only thing left now is to arrange for future get togethers with some of you now.

(May have to survey other locales such as Los Altos, Chabot or Sunnyvale later as well)

    Hey Naz

Just wondering...does your Dad shoot too?

Sounds like a great time to bond. Good going.

My dad did shoot before (though not civilian purposes, when he served in the Taiwanese Military he got his fair share with firing Taiwanese AR-15s and loaned M1 Garands), even though he still hasn't gotten used to my rifle, he still knows what hes doing, managed to get some in the black today, of course he probably would've done better if we had a minute of angle type rifle, though he isn't really a shooting enthusiast though he does support me in what I do and enjoys shooting when he gets the chance. Hes seemed awfully interested in a Ruger 10/22s these days though after I informed him of how cheap ammo can be.

What distance were you shooting at? Even with an SKS, the black seems like it'd be attainable.

Glad you finally took the beast out.

Blocks and bags of sand are by the 100 yard range

Metcalf is a great place. Be sure to fill out the survey from Santa Clara County about your visit:

Oh yeah, my dad managed to get the black, the problem is that right now the rifle is better than I am. My dad did say he saw some promise in me when I actually managed to get a consistant grouping at one point and told me that I'd get better over time once I shot some more. The first day wasn't so hot because as you'd expect, I just wanted to shoot that sucker and was more consumed with excitment rather than taking my time and going for accurate shots. Of course next time I'll take my time and my elbow won't be killing me. After I get tight groupings at the 50, I'll move on to the 100 and probably at that point I'll be able to pay off my dad for all the stuff I've been buying and maybe I can get my hands on a Mosin Nagant and get used to shooting for the sake of accuracy.

Heh, pretty much ANY rifle I pick up is better than I am...

                  Well lets go!

I have been promising my son a trip to the range. Tell me what you want to shoot and lets go. PM me and we can have your dad call me to arrange a time.

When I took my SKS out for the first time I managed to get 9 out of 10 shots into center mass on a man sized target at 100 yards with iron sights, can't ask for more out of a SKS, especially for the first range session I suppose.

                          (SKS vid)

I shot my OLL AR last week for the first time with a scope set at 9X and was putting them right in the center of the target at 25 yards(we got there right before closing, that was the only available lane), I had to "move" my point of aim around so I wouldn't be putting the rounds into the same hole on paper.

(OLL rifle vid-using the "dropped trigger guard" method.)

Point of the story?, enjoy your SKS, but buy a OLL lower/rifle also! The accuracy difference is night and day! While you're at it pick up the 10/22.

                          (10/22 vid)

                          Shooting stuff is fun.

I finally figured out why my accuracy was so much crap. I was adjusting my rear sight thinking in terms of (100 feet, 200 feet, 300 feet, etc.) rather than meters, so I basically had my sights adjusted two notches too high and I was hitting basically when I got lazy and let my rifle lower a bit more. I'll probably get better accuracy if I shoot in a supported position. (I was firing in the sitting unsupported position, was wondering why the guy next to me was giving his sandbags to the range, better take advantage of those later)

Before I take my new scoped guns to the range, I always take them to a local gun shop and have them boresight it first so I don't waste time/ammo on getting it on paper, and getting frustrated. Check the local gunshops to see who will do this cheap or free.
