Some might not like them but I have bought 4 of the subcompact xd9 over the past 2 years. I always bought them during the Springfield rebate deals with extra mags and bag. It's a deal that cannot be beat for a gun in the low $400 range. They are perfect to stash in every vehicle and with 4 mags per gun and I actually like the way they shoot!

I think it's best to be proficient in a single platform then be jack of all trades and master of none.
Be it rifle/handgun more then one of the same is smart, more then 5 is ideal.

I did the same thing that you did. Bought a Ruger MK II for each kid and started to do the same thing with the Marlin 39a. But one day, I just scrapped the plan; that'll be just too many guns and not enough room in the safe. Also, they might not even like what I've planned to give them. I decided to give them each one 22LR handgun and one 22LR rifle (of their choosing) when they get old enough. Beyond that, I have to think more about how I'm going to allocate the rest of my stash - perhaps it'll become self-evident when they show their preference on what they like to shoot.

Now, I get backups in categories.
I have big bores in the following calibers .500, .458, .416. When going to Africa I take two of the above with one being a backup/plains game rifle. Also, it is illegal to bring two or more of the same caliber in some of the African countries so having two rifles of different calibers complies with the regulations.

Yeah I'm starting to realize that. Went shooting with my son this weekend and he said "I shoot better with the XD9 than the VP9". After making him walk home, I realized what they like and or want might not be what I like or want.

So for now I'm just going to put the 3 VPs in my 3 FAS1 safes around the house. That way I have all three the same with the same mags.

After I go they can divvy them up as they see fit.

if its for HD or SD or competition, I would say 2 is enough of the same exact gun. that way if one goes down, you have a back up of the same gun.

if similar but different, like sights, or color etc.. then to your hearts content.

Dozen Mosins just looks cool. Much better than a hutch full of china and glass.

Nothing better than everyone shooting the same type of gun to figure out who can actually shoot. Passing one around just ain't the same.

You should have at least two of any gun you never want to be without.

If you anticipate needing to arm a group (such as a neighborhood security group in case of riots or civil unrest) it's beneficial to be able to supply that group with several similar arms so that magazines, ammo and accessories can be shared.

If you take day-long or multi-day classes or activities, it can be a wise investment to have duplicates in case your primary goes down. That way you are not wasting your class time with a broken firearm if something happens.

I think the roster debacle is proof that it's prudent to have duplicates. If your gun is damaged in a way that is infeasible to repair, or if it is stolen, or taken as evidence - it's nice to know you have a backup somewhere to fall back on, because just running out and replacing it isn't always in the cards.

Exactly the same....2 9mm Shields and 2 DW CBOBs. I did change grips on my CBOB shooter tho.
