When I got my DCM Garand back in the 80s, after falling a medium sized tree with it, I decided that if I could only have one rifle, it would be my Garand - I can hit anything I can see, and anything I hit is ruined.

You guys are all choosing pistols?

If I have only one gun, it's a pump 12 gauge.

USP 45. No doubt. Acurate, reliable and powerful. 13+1 ranger t +p. Trijicon night sights, sandpaper grips (not cheap skateboard tape) viridian x5l gen 1, and bill springfield 3.75 lb trigger. Before anyone throws a fit I know mags are labeled 12 but all 5 of them hold 13 but for long term I keep them at 12.

Would have to either be my Remington 870 or my Winchester 1300 Defender.

My 870 is set up perfectly for me with a Magpul stock and fore end. While the Winchester had been completely customized by my uncle before he gave it to me, has a pistol grip equipped full stock and has Vang Comp porting so even shooting slugs is about as harsh as birdshot.

This question is flawed. It should be which long arm and side arm would you keep? Well OP, since you asked:

Side Arm: Sig M11A1 Desert. Cool factor in that it is in used by our nation's armed forces, plus the reliability of Sig, plus the practicality of a 9mm that is large enough for inspiring confidence while shooting yet compact enough for conceal carry.

Long Arm: Springfield Armory M1 Garand - nothing shoots quite like an M1. Huge fun factor, hits hard, and reaches out to 500 yards with irons. Rugged, reliable, and a proven track record.

Colt Commander, Series 80. Worked fine 100 years ago, will probably continue to do so for another 100 years. Modern one is arguably safer, and the Commander is compact enough to carry but big enough to be pretty accurate with.

sigpicC'mon man, shouldn't we ban Democracks from Cal-Guns? Or at least send them to re-education camps.

If the term "survival" means staying alive by using one weapon to kill animals for food as well as self protection then a 12 gauge shot gun is the choice. This weapon will allow you to harvest quail, pheasant, grouse, ducks and geese as well as four footed critters. With slug rounds deer, elk, antelope and moose can be taken. This is impossible with any other type of firearm.

The variety in ammunition permits a wide variety of game to be taken. 00 buckshot and slug rounds are great home defense rounds. Other weapon choices obviously limit you. Ammo is available everywhere also.
