Advantages of rifle rounds:

Terminal ballistics. Bullet profile combined with velocity can make a big difference. Spitzer bullets, especially in conjunction with high velocity and cannelure, will yaw and possibly fragment in flesh.

Barrier penetration. The higher velocity and sectional density of rifle rounds give them an advantage in penetrating hard barriers.

Ballistics. The higher ballistic coefficients of rifle bullets plus larger muzzle velocity, and the practical and mechanical accuracy advantage of long arms, means the efficient range of rifles are much farther than handguns.

It makes two holes to bleed out of instead of just one.

Likewise, higher velocity ammo pushes tissue out of the way at higher velocity. That tissue has momentum. If the velocity is high enough, the momentum can be great enough to overcome the elasticity of that tissue, rupturing said tissue and causing a larger permanent wound cavity.

Handgun bullets are generally not fast enough to do that, and disrupt only a (or an expanded) caliber size volume of tissue.

How many nations use handguns as a primary infantry weapon?

Not 10000% positive, but I'm pretty sure that number would be ZERO.
Handguns are great for carrying, but getting in any kind of combat with one past about 15 yards is going to end badly for the handgunner.
